Health and Safety Manager

Job Description

Our client has unparalleled international experience in infrastructure projects, bridges, highways, tunnels, dams and marine works.

As a result of a significant award in the Aberdeen area they are now looking to appoint experienced Health and Safety Manager, ideally from a main contractor civil engineering and marine construction background.

In this instance my client is looking for interested applicants who already live in the Aberdeen area (or commutable) and/or are willing to relocate on a permanent basis

Purpose of the job

The Health and Safety Manager is responsible for supporting the project to ensure the continued health, safety and well being of everyone working on the project, and the general public through the provision of leadership, guidance and support compliant with legislation, client requirements and industry best practice.

Candidate Profile

Demonstrable robust background in construction with marine experience as an advantage. 

Has a clear understanding of the role of a project health and safety manager and how to influence the project team and stakeholders throughout the construction lifecycle. The candidate will not be expected to ‘have all the answers’ but should be equipped to ask key and challenging questions of responsible managers.

Is an excellent team player who can also work independently and drive his/her own workload to deliver results to a high standard

Ability and proven record of managing a team.

Enjoys work in a fast moving demanding 24/7 environment and remains composed under pressure. 

Available to work nights/weekends – if required. 

Key responsibilities

Ensure implementation of the Health and Safety Policy and Health and Safety Strategy.

Ensure project compliance with statutory legislation, contractual safety requirements and industry best practice.

Assist in the preparation and review of risk assessments and safe systems of work.

Actively promote behaviours key to a positive health and safety culture.

Support and carry out inspection and monitoring activities and effectively use the arising data. 

Develop and deliver inductions and additional training as required.

Coach and guide others

Assist in and carry out investigations of accidents and incidents and support the implementation and timely close out of corrective actions. 

Ensure that key H&S data including incident, monitoring, engagement and audit findings are recorded in the appropriate management database and are used to inform learning and drive forward improvement.

Visibly active both within the office and site environments.

Assist with the capturing of lessons learned and the dissemination of the information through the creation of toolbox talks, briefings.

Set a personal example of the behaviours that positively influence H&S attitudes.

Experience of implementing Behavioural Based Safety Initiatives.

Experience of implementing Occupational Health Initiatives.

Experience of implementing Training Initiatives and Programmes.

Experience of delivering training and conducting presentations as required.

Business and commercial awareness.

Ability to influence at leadership levels. 

Experience, knowledge, qualifications & training

Essential 

Minimum 5 years’ experience in construction with Major Projects (civil / infrastructure)

Holds NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification

Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal and ability to communicate effectively at all levels throughout the project.

Tech IOSH membership working towards Grad/CMIOSH status 

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence both project team and key stakeholders.

Computer literate with experience of Microsoft Powerpoint, Excel, Word, Outlook

Desirable
