Civitas is a small, high-performing, fully remote team of public health and health care association management professionals who are working to build our new organization both to serve our 170+ member organizations across the country and to deliver on our mission. Our members represent regional health improvement collaboratives, regional and statewide health information exchanges, quality improvement organizations, all-payer claims databases, health data organizations, and affiliated organizations. Our federal and national grant-funded programs focus on multi-site data-driven approaches to advance health and health equity. The ideal person to serve in this role is looking for an opportunity to grow within a dynamic nonprofit organization with an important mission and is interested in developing and applying subject-matter expertise in Civitas’ areas of focus. 

Job Description

Position Summary  

We are seeking a skilled, highly organized, and creative Senior Communications and Marketing Manager to join our nonprofit organization. As the Senior Communications and Marketing Manager, you will play a crucial role in developing and implementing communications strategies to enhance our organization's visibility, attract new members and partners, support member engagement, and advance our mission by elevating our events, resources, and programs. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Strategy and Network Engagement and managing a Communications Specialist’s work, you will be responsible for shaping and executing daily communications and marketing activities. 

Responsibilities 

Communications and Marketing: 

  • Manage daily communications and Civitas’ Communications Specialist’s work. 
  • Create and implement effective communications plans aligned with organizational goals, member engagement initiatives, programs, and advocacy efforts. 
  • Craft compelling messages that convey the organization's mission, values, and key initiatives to internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Lead the production of various communications materials, including newsletter content, blog posts, press releases, media pitches, social media content, industry resources, and website updates. 
  • Utilize multiple communications channels to reach target audiences and maximize impact, such as email, social media, webinars, conferences, and press. 

Member Engagement and Outreach: 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop member engagement strategies that foster active participation, drive member satisfaction, and strengthen member relationships. 
  • Implement effective communications campaigns to promote member benefits, resources, events, and educational programs. 
  • Regularly engage with members to gather feedback, address inquiries, and provide relevant updates on industry trends, policy changes, and organizational initiatives. 
  • Leverage member success stories and testimonials to highlight the value of membership and attract new members. 

Media and Public Relations: 

  • Cultivate relationships with media outlets, journalists, and industry influencers to increase media coverage and enhance the organization's visibility. 
  • Develop press releases, media kits, and other materials to distribute to media contacts. 
  • Coordinate media interviews and speaking engagements for key staff members. 
  • Monitor industry trends, news, and policy developments to identify opportunities for proactive media outreach and thought leadership. 

Analytics and Continuous Improvement: 

  • Monitor and analyze communications and marketing metrics to assess the effectiveness of communication strategies and tactics. 
  • Provide regular reports and insights to key stakeholders, making recommendations for improvement and optimization. 
  • Stay informed about emerging communications trends, technologies, and best practices to continuously enhance the organization's outreach efforts. 

Content Development and Branding: 

  • Create engaging and informative content for various platforms, including website, blog, social media, and other publications. 
  • Ensure consistent branding and messaging across all communications channels and materials. 
  • Collaborate with internal teams to gather content, conduct interviews, and research industry topics for content creation. 
  • Develop and maintain editorial calendars to ensure timely delivery of content. 
  • Review materials created by other Civitas team members and contractors to ensure external brand messaging and visual consistency.  

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field. 
  • Proven experience (8-10+ years) in communications, public relations, or marketing, with required experience in a related industry, such as the health IT/health data, health information exchange, quality/health improvement, or public health fields.  
  • Experience in personnel management, including managing at least one direct report is highly preferred. 
  • Mission alignment – we are looking for communications and marketing professionals who care about the advancement of community-centric, data-driven health improvement, and want to work in a dynamic nonprofit organization. Membership organization/association experience is preferable. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages for diverse audiences. 
  • Strong storytelling and content development abilities, with experience creating compelling copy for different mediums. 
  • Proficiency in social media management, email marketing, and content management systems. 
  • Familiarity with media relations and demonstrated success in securing media coverage. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. 
  • Experience with analytics tools and data-driven decision-making. 
  • Understanding of branding principles and the ability to maintain brand consistency across all communication channels. 

Additional Information

Compensation 

  • Salary range: $85,000 to $100,000/year for the full-time position. Eligible for a performance-based bonus. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, qualifications, and experience of the candidate.

Location and Travel Requirements 

  • This is a fully remote position with occasional travel requirements. Employees must reside and perform their duties within the geographical boundaries of the United States, excluding its territories.  
  • Our team and organizational members are located across the U.S. We work for approximately 8 hours per day/40 hours per week and team members are expected to be available during the core team hours of 12 PM - 4 PM ET, Monday through Friday.  
  • While the position is fully remote (no physical home office), employees must have a private and quiet place to work with consistent and fast internet and phone access.
