The First Judicial District of Pennsylvania (“FJD”) is the Philadelphia County Court System and is composed of two courts:  the Court of Common Pleas and the Municipal Court.  The mission of the FJD is to adjudicate cases and provide services to the community within our jurisdiction while ensuring fair, timely, and accessible justice to the people of Philadelphia.  The FJD is part of the Unified Judicial System reporting in to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

Work-Life

Working hours are 40 hours per week.  This is a full-time, in person position with the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania.

Job Description

Position Summary

This is specialized work functioning as an aide to a member of the judiciary in the Criminal Trial Division, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Important aspects of the job involve researching case status and gathering materials for each day’s court list, assisting the judge’s law clerk with drafting orders and other court documents, maintaining chambers electronic and physical files, data entry, assisting with the jury selection process, interacting with juries, and providing logistical support while court is in session. Legal writing and research projects are available for employees who are interested in developing those skills.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all- inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  •  Providing logistical support in the courtroom.
  • Assisting the judicial law clerk with setting up and maintaining chambers files.
  • Searching for and studying legal records and case correspondence for applicable data.
  • Gathering necessary information from case participants and from personnel across the court system.
  • Preparing drafts of orders and other court documents.
  • Entering sentences into statewide database.
  • Assisting with jury selection.
  • Performing related work as required

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION

  • Standard courtroom and clerical office conditions.
  • Direct contact with court personnel, attorneys, and jurors.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of, or interest in learning, the components and functions of the criminal justice system.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a self-directed fashion.
  • Knowledge of Windows software applications and ability to learn and use the Court’s information management software.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions and to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effecting working relationships with members of the judiciary, attorneys, courtroom and chambers personnel, court staff, and the general public.

Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Appropriate experience in the use of Windows Software applications.
  3. Superior organizational and communication skills.
  4. Interest in Criminal Law preferred.
  5. Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation.
  6. Must work on site (not remote).

Salary Range: $45,108 - $49,433
