Licenses & Inspections is a public safety agency that oversees all construction, property maintenance, and licensing for the City of Philadelphia.

Job Description

This position is responsible for coordinating media relations and digital communications for the Department of License and Inspections. The Manager will develop a robust and responsive digital presence for the Department by building out L&I’s upcoming new-and-improved website, creating regular external and internal communications, and developing the Department’s first comprehensive digital strategy. Performs related duties as required. This position is critical to public safety and since it directly manages L&I Communication efforts regarding all Departmental activities including building emergencies, permit issuance, inspections and enforcement of safety codes.

Essential Functions

  • Secure positive press coverage for L&I programs and initiatives
  • Oversee branding, design and printing of informational material
  • Service daily media requests, secure information and verify statement accuracy  
  • Write press releases, fact sheets and other press materials, under the direction of the Communications Director
  • Follow up with media contacts. Answer questions, or direct inquiries to the proper contact person. 

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work independently to achieve goals
  • Ability to problem solve and think creatively to produce solutions
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and/or crisis
  • Ability to multi-task, work under tight deadlines and frequently adjust to changing priorities and timelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, experience writing press releases
  • Experience working with WordPress, Microsoft Office/Teams, Sharepoint, etc.

Work-Life

Working hours are generally 37.5 hours per week.  Our team is currently hybrid with both virtual and in-office days, however the position can opt to come in the office each day if desired.  Additionally, in-office work is mandatory for the first few months.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • 3-5 years of paid experience in communications, journalism, public affairs managing digital/social media, or a related field
  • Experience with social media including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok a plus
  • Experience with both digital and traditional communications
  • Experience in media relations and building relationships with local members of the press
  • Experience shooting and editing video

Salary Range: $72,000 - $77,000
