Agency Description

The Philadelphia Water Department is a municipal department of approximately 2500 employees working in all facets to provide water/wastewater treatment services to the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties.

The Water Accountability Unit develops and implements best management practices to improve revenue generation through the evaluation and reduction of non-revenue water. The Water Accountability Unit provides engineering support to, optimize ‘meter to cash’ business practices, quantify water uses and losses, improve customer service, and capital planning, and uphold excellence in core services. 

Job Description

This full-time internship/co-op position will begin in April 2023 and end in September 2023. Schedules will be determined during the interview. The position will require candidates to work hybrid schedules, which means in-person and remote workdays.

Essential Functions

  • Primary responsibility will include assisting the conveyance division with the review and update of standard operating procedures and monitoring performance metrics.  
  • Develop a complete understanding of the water supply system, customer metering and billing systems and Automatic Meter Reading (AMR)/Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systems
  • Participate and assist in regularly scheduled meetings led by the Water Accountability Program 
  • Attend and represent Philadelphia Water in external meetings
  • Prepare technical reports and memorandum related to Water Accountability tasks and assignments
  • Apply engineering expertise and knowledge to analyze and specify improved water meters, leakage management systems, AMR/AMI technology, and systems for improved billing and customer response capabilities.
  • Become proficient in best practices for water auditing, leakage and pressure management, metering systems, and current standards and codes for water supply and accountability of operations.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Experience in operating in a professional office environment Microsoft Office 365 Suite strong written, verbal, analytical and intrapersonal skills desired. Ability to work collaboratively and independently. Self-motivated. Proficiency with computers, specifically Microsoft Office. Mechanical aptitude is a plus. A valid PA driver's license and Proof of Covid19 vaccination are required.
