Agency Description

The Philadelphia Water Department is a municipal department of approximately 2500 employees working in all facets to provide water/wastewater treatment services to the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties.

The Capital Planning Program in the Planning & Research Unit at the Philadelphia Water Department provides support for the Department’s capital budget process and facilitates in the development of the capital improvement plan through planning efforts and asset management. The overarching goal of this program is to inform the capital budget through project prioritization, inter-Departmental communication, financial forecasting, and asset management.

Job Description

This full-time internship/co-op position will begin in April 2023 and end in September 2023. Schedules will be determined during the interview. The position will require candidates to work hybrid schedules, which means in-person and remote workdays.

Essential Functions

The student will be employed as an Engineering Intern in the Capital Planning Program. The main assignment will be to assist the engineers, GIS specialists, and scientists in completing various tasks for numerous projects associated with drinking water and wastewater facilities.

The co-op will be responsible for performing various tasks, which may include:

  • Compiling, analyzing, updating, and interpreting data collected from field locations or our databases to support facility planning and aid in financial forecasting for capital improvements.
  • Utilizing GIS software to compile, maintain, and produce geospatial data and maps.
  • Reviewing and commenting on engineering technical reports.
  • Attending and participating in meetings for capital projects aimed at improving the short- and long-term operational capabilities of the drinking water and wastewater facilities.
  • Reading and summarizing relevant literature for various engineering research projects.
  • Assisting in organizing presentations, handouts, and notes for meetings with Executive and other PWD staff members.
  • Organizing and participating in Knowledge Management Program tasks that include webinars about water, wastewater, and stormwater services.

  • Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel

  • Valid Driver's License
