Project Summary
Philadelphia Parks and Recreation (PPR) is developing a new program to provide on-the-job coaching and career-readiness training to Summer WorkReady participants across 8 to 10 Parks and Recreation sites in Summer 2019.  The program will be designed to prepare young people with the skills and experiences needed to identify and pursue their career interests. To do so it will be comprised of the following two components:

Onsite Job Coaching (Monday to Friday, morning session)
A team of 5 Career Readiness Coaches will support WorkReady participants across 10 sites to develop and strengthen the skills required to be effective camp counselors.  Each Career Readiness Coach will provide instruction and support on best-practices in work readiness and youth development (2 days per week, per site).  Activities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Daily meeting with WorkReady participants to review key work goals and objectives, and reflect on success and areas for growth
  • Opportunities for real-time skill assessment, goal setting, modeling, practice and reflection

Weekly college + career coaching session (Friday afternoons, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.)
Career Readiness Coaches will partner with the Mayor’s Internship Program to provide weekly college and career readiness activities aligned to the Career Development Framework.  Sample activities include, but will not be limited to:

  • Exploring careers aligned to a young people’s interest, with a focus on career pathways within the City of Philadelphia broadly, and Parks and Recreation specifically
  • Conflict resolution and teamwork
  • Public speaking and mock-interviews
  • Financial literacy

The program model will align to the Philadelphia Youth Network’s Career Development Framework and leverage support for best practice implementation from the Department of Human Service’s Out-of-School Time initiative.
