AGENCY DESCRIPTION

The Division of Planning and Zoning (DPZ) is housed with the City’s Department of Planning and Development. DPZ is comprised of the Planning Commission (PCPC), Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA), Historical Commission (PHC), and the Art Commission. Each of these groups are supported by staff and collectively they work to ensure that proposed development is consistent with the City’s long-term vision for the built environment. This is done through a variety of activities, including engagement with the community, research and review of proposed City policies, review of proposed development on public and private properties, and protection of historic assets.   

Job Description

The Community Planning Division is seeking a full-time, work-study or academic credit historic preservation intern during the summer of 2018. Candidates are expected to work 35 hours per week. Primary tasks will relate to historical and preservation research to prepare for the Philadelphia2035 comprehensive planning work (www.phila2035.org) and general community planning. Secondary tasks will relate to the work of the Historic Preservation Task Force and research and writing of nominations to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places for sites throughout the city of Philadelphia. The selected candidate will report directly to the Community Planning Division Director.

 

Essential Functions

●  Historical research for implementation of district plans and potential historical nominations

●  Supporting the Historic Preservation Task Force through administrative duties

●  Creating maps and graphics for plan documents

●  Taking photographs and assisting with other field work as well as performing general project administration duties

 

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

●  Strong skills in research, writing, and graphic design

●  Expertise in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel).

●  Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and ArcGIS

●  Positive attitude and willingness to contribute in a variety of ways.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a graduate level graduate level Historic Preservation program.

Additional Information

Successful candidate must be a city of Philadelphia resident within six months of hire.
