AGENCY DESCRIPTION

The Mayor’s Office of Black Male Engagement (OBME) operates as the only office of its kind in the United States of America. As an intentional branch of Philadelphia’s local governmental structure, the Office looks to serve as a “voice” and liaison between individuals/ organizations and local government. Utilizing a policy driven – collective impact model, OBME leads the City’s work around closing the opportunity divide for men and boys of color.

The Office of Black Male Engagement:


  • Creates a broader awareness of the issues of racial equity internal and external of city government.
  • Is the liaison for the Mayor’s Office on local and national initiatives in the Black Men and Boys/Males of Color sector.
  • Improves access to the Mayor’s Office by communities that are often disenfranchised.

Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Office of Black Male Engagement works to align and focus resources and initiatives towards the specific goal of reducing economic/social disparities and improving outcomes for Black men and boys, as well as the communities in which they live. As a part of the Office of Public Engagement, a key responsibility is to create and implement systems to engage community members in local government and as partners to impact issues pertaining to Black men and boys as well as the larger community. The Coordinator will play a leading role in delivering on the mission of our Mayor’s Commission on African American Males (MCAAM). The Coordinator is also charged with managing the execution of resources, services, events surrounding our 6th Milestone (All youth remain safe and are given a second chance) with the My Brother’s Keeper (MBK), Philadelphia Initiative. MBK, Philadelphia is a collective that engages and empowers individuals and organizations to take action in dismantling systems of inequality to create measurable change for youth.

SALARY - Commensurate with education and experience

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Will work with Director in aligning resources and initiatives with a specific goal to reduce disparities between economic and social outcomes of Black men and boys, and those connected to them.
  • Will work with Director in managing a city-wide collaborative that includes city government, the philanthropic and non-profit community, youth, and community members including establishing collaborations and connections to services in some of our most vulnerable communities.
  • Will work with the Chair of the Mayor’s Commission on African American Males (MCAAM) on managing the Mayor’s Commission on African American Males.
  • Will work with the Director to engage individual experts, as well as informational resources, that can help frame and advance the work of Black Male Achievement.
  • Provide direction and leadership about priorities for the MBK, Philadelphia 6th milestone, coordinating communication, meetings, events, etc. between a sound leadership team.
  • Develop and implement youth-oriented events and activities in coordination with members of the MBK Philly Network.
  • Will provide content and oversight for multiple communication vehicles, including progress reports, strategic plans, @MBKPhilly, a WordPress website, a monthly newsletter, MailChimp notifications and Instagram.
  • Understanding city government and actively working to develop projects internal to city government as well with external stakeholders that further the mission of this office.
  • Will be responsible for managing the weekly spotlight series with the OBME

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years working in community engagement field
  • College degree preferred
