AGENCY DESCRIPTION

The City of Philadelphia (City)’s Office of Criminal Justice (OCJ) facilitates partnerships between City agencies, criminal justice partners, non-profit organizations, and community members in order to advance the Kenney administration’s goals around violence prevention, criminal justice reform, and serving the formerly incarcerated.

In order to advance the Kenney Administration’s goals around violence prevention, criminal justice reform, and serving the formerly incarcerated, the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Criminal Justice (OCJ) has formed a Violence Prevention initiative which will focus 100% of its efforts on reducing crime in the city of Philadelphia.

Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The OCJ is seeking an individual to provide analytical support for research and evidence-based projects for the OCJ in the area of violence prevention policy. They will be responsible for managing and analyzing data, researching and interpreting policy, and communicating findings to multiple audiences and stakeholders. Policy areas will primarily focus on violence prevention and intervention strategies, but will also include all city-wide criminal justice improvements that may apply. The Analyst will focus on the collection, analysis, and manipulation of a broad range of data and assist in the development of meaningful recommendations for the Office of Criminal Justice. This position will report to the Director of Violence Prevention.

SALARY - $60,000 - $65,000 per year

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop policy for improving public safety for community members and individuals with lived experience in violence prevention work
  • Coordinate/collaborate with key stakeholders, both external and internal, working across various departments, engaging in tasks related to violence prevention and intervention policy.
  • Research and report on a wide array of policy issues related to violence prevention
  • Write research and data analysis summary briefs and other substantive communications materials that explain and advocate for OCJ violence prevention initiates & Criminal justice reforms 
  • Generate reports and briefs to update City officials and community partners on the City’s violence prevention efforts
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis using publicly available datasets, as well as manage the process of new data collection in support OCJ
  • Maintain relentless commitment to creating and enabling policy practices that prioritize violence reduction and other criminal justice reform opportunity 
  • Represent the City of Philadelphia in a variety of events and meetings with various internal and external stakeholders

  • Ability to translate analyses into written products for both narrow and broad audiences
  • Knowledge of evidence-based violence prevention strategies
  • Comfort working with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, ranging from high ranking City officials to individuals engaged in group violence 
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and written communication skills
  • Ability to quickly learn new programs, systems, and policies
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Commitment to improving the lives of all Philadelphians by reducing group violence in a sustainable way

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in violence prevention, criminal justice reform, or a related field
  • Experience with an understanding of data collection methods and data presentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest in policy issues related to criminal justice and violence prevention 
  • Experience implementing an evidence-based violence prevention strategy
  • Ability to analyze data using a statistical program like R or Stata
  • A passion for engaging community members in work to improve their neighborhoods
  • Master’s degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Public Health, or a related field
