AGENCY DESCRIPTION

The Managing Director’s Office (MDO) manages and oversees the operations of the City. The First Deputy Managing Director, reporting to the Managing Director, in conjunction with Cabinet-level Deputies, provides operational oversight departmental clusters: Health and Human Services, Community and Culture, Community Services, Public Safety and Criminal Justice, and Transportation and Infrastructure.

Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The primary responsibilities of this position include coordinating communications and outreach related to the implementation of Greenworks: A Vision for a Sustainable Philadelphia. The position reports to the Director of Sustainability and works closely with partners within city government, external stakeholders, communities and residents. 

Candidates fluent in a second language, which is preferred but not required, will also help communicate about Greenworks in that language.

SALARY - $42,000 to $48,000 – Commensurate with education and experience

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manage regular communication needs for the office, including managing social media, responding to constituent requests, and attending public events on behalf of OOS.
  • Develop and implement a communications plan to expand the reach of OOS to all Philadelphia residents.
  • Manage and deepen relationships with external partners, community groups, and residents to implement Greenworks visions within Philadelphia’s neighborhoods.
  • Plan, write, and manage monthly newsletter and weekly blog posts.
  • Interact with community organizations and the general public.
  • Build case studies and communication materials on the efficacy of completed projects and programs.
  • Collaborate with City agencies including the Office of Innovation and Technology, the Office of Open Data and Digital Transformation, and the Mayor’s Office on communication and outreach issues.

  • Sustainability Literacy – Knowledge of emerging environmental and social trends related to sustainability. 
  • Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, considering the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Written Communication - Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.
  • Planning and Evaluating - Organizes work, sets priorities, and determines resource requirements; determines short- or long-term goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinates with other organizations or parts of the organization to accomplish goals; monitors progress and evaluates outcomes.
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) - Knowledge or experience with using CRM software.
  • Interpersonal Skills - Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience required.
  2. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are required.
  3. Experience with community outreach and implementing a communications strategy are required. 
  4. Data management skills preferred, but not required. 
  5. Fluency in a second language preferred, but not required.
