The San Francisco Department of Public Health's Climate and Health Program is accepting applications for a full-time Temporary Exempt Epidemiologist I (2802). 

This  position will provide epidemiological support to the Climate and Health Program to measure and project health impacts due to climate change, as well as identify, evaluate and improve actions to address those health impacts. This role will also meet the deliverables as identified in the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Climate Resilient States and Cities Initiative (CRSCI).

Under direction of senior Epidemiologist or related research experience staff, the Epidemiologist I implements surveillance, community health assessment, and research plans, uses epidemiologic or related public health evaluation survey instruments, and analyzes data sets to identify and describe patterns of health outcomes and their determinants.

Working hours vary depending on location. Some positions may require working evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts.

Temporary Exempt - In accordance with San Francisco Charter Section 10.104.

Some positions are limited to 1,040 work hours in a year. Exempt employees are considered "at will" and serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. Job Description

Under general supervision of the Director of the Center for Data Science, the Climate and Health Epidemiologist I performs the following duties:

  • Project Development and Research Design to support Climate and Health Program deliverables. This includes literature reviews, succinctly summarizes key findings, coordinating with project stakeholders to identify research methods, identifying deliverables, and establishing project timelines.
  • Epidemiology and Data Analysis to synthesize data and communicate necessary to project or measure health impacts and evaluate actions. This includes knowledge of statistical analytic methods, analysis software, and geospatial analysis software (GIS).
  • Data Communications to make sure research and analyses are accessible to project stakeholders. This includes development of data dashboards, written communications, and oral presentations for varied audiences. Prepares data for review in tables, reports, and graphics as directed by senior staff.
  • Coordination and Planning to work across the Department of Public Health and other City Departments, with academic institutions, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure that data analysis and evaluation functions meet multiple objectives. Participates in stakeholder and community engagement for data interpretation.
  • Evaluation research including identification of process and outcomes performance measures, target measures, establishing data collection and maintenance plans, and assisting with reports to meet grant deliverables.
  • Provides quality control of data by assisting with coding, overseeing data entry, cleaning data, and preparing documentation as well as procuring data from secondary sources.
  • Creates and/or manipulates databases of original/secondary data and conducts analyses using statistical software packages under the direction of senior staff.
  • Utilizes geographic information systems and spatial analysis tools to evaluate and present data.

The 2802 Epidemiologist I also performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - Required

  1. Education: Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university; AND
  2. Experience: Two (2) years (equivalent to 4,000 hours) of experience within the field of Epidemiology performing study design, evaluation or analysis.

Substitution: Possession of a master’s degree in Epidemiology (or a related social, psychological, or biological science) may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.

One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Desirable Qualifications
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • Previous work with (or interest in) an empirical approach to studying climate change, its health impacts, and the variables that drive those health impacts.
  • Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) and spatial analysis
  • Experience with SQL, R and other data analytic software packages (e.g., SPSS, SAS) for data cleaning and analyses;
  • Experience with PowerBI, Tableau, or comparable data visualization tools;
  • Experience with program evaluation and logic models;
  • Experience developing and maintaining databases;
  • Experience with cleaning data and documenting data cleaning steps;
  • Experience with analyzing, summarizing, and interpreting data;
  • Ability to acquire and manage secondary data sources for use by multiple analysts;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational skills, project management and time management skills;
