APPOINTMENT TYPE: Temporary Provisional (TPV). This is a Temporary Provisional (TPV) position excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process. It is considered "at will" and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head. This position will be subject to the Permanent Civil Service examination process at a later date. Successful participation in the Permanent Civil Service examination and selection through an open competitive process is needed in order to be considered for the permanent appointment.

Salary Range (Step 1 - 5): $26.8564 - $32.4901/hour; $55,861.00 - $67,579.00/year.

Job Description

One (1) Temporary-Provisional, Full-time (40 hrs./week), School-Term-Only (STO), (240 days/year) position. A school-term-only employee is hired for a specific work calendar and may not have an assignment during the school/academic breaks.

Under general supervision, the Tool Room Mechanic/Custodian is responsible for the care and storage of tools, parts, and supplies; responsible for the maintenance and repair of tools, small equipment, and responsible for maintaining storage area in the vocation training programs of the San Francisco Community College District located at our Evans Center.  Responsibility also includes following established methods and procedures in the keeping, issuing, receiving and repairing tools, equipment and other maintenance materials.

Job Duties:

1.  Receive and issue all tools and equipment used in vocational training programs conducted by City College of San Francisco.

2.  Maintain and repair tolls and equipment including electrical and mechanical equipment, (including all phases of disassembly, cleaning, ordering new parts and reassembly).

3.  Perform safety checks on all issued tools and equipment.

4.  Check returned tools and equipment for defective parts, orders replacements of supplies and stock items as required.

5.  Repair air hoses and electrical extension cords, other equipment as necessary.

6.  Operate forklift to receive supplies and equipment and assist in all programs, as needed.

7.  Maintain donated vehicles, keep and maintain fluids, fill with gas and charge batteries.

8.  Maintain and update current tools and equipment database.

9.  Keep inventory of all tools in the Department, both paper and electronically.

10. Keep current vendor/repair record database.

11.  Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires completion of eight (8) years of elementary school, supplemented by at least one year of experience in general mechanical maintenance and repair work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Requires working knowledge of various hand tools and equipment used in repair operations; requires ability to repair and maintain various automotive and aircraft shop tools.

Requires ability to keep simple routine records; deal courteously, effectively and tactfully with fellow employees and students.

Working Conditions:  Work assignments may include days, nights, and weekends or an alternate work schedule.  Nature of work requires some physical effort and dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, and body; intermittent exposure to working conditions where minor injuries may occur. 

Desirable Qualifications: 

1.  Working knowledge of various hand tools, e.g. wrenches, pliers, screw drivers and equipment, test gauges and multi-meters, computer desktop, vacuum, broom and cleaning equipment, test bench; ability to repair and maintain simple tools and equipment.  Ability to keep simple routine records; deal courteously, effectively and tactfully with fellow employees and students.

2.  Possession of Forklift Certification or verification enrollment in Forklift Training and Certification class.

3.  Possession of Automotive and Repair Certification.

Benefits:

1.  Additional Days Off with Pay. As stipulated in the appropriate bargaining agreements and board resolutions, Classified employees working full-year (260 days/year) work schedules are granted, as paid days off, the days between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, as well as an additional five (5) paid days off during spring break. Eligible school-term-only (STO) employees who are not scheduled to work the designated days between Christmas and New Year’s Day shall be granted three (3) paid days off to be scheduled by mutual agreement between the employee and supervisor. Eligible school- term-only (STO) employees who are not scheduled to work the days designated as Spring Break will not be paid for these days off.

2.  New employees hired on or after October 1, 2013 will contribute 2% of salary to the San Francisco Retiree Health Care Trust Fund (RHCTF).
