GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Public service position assigned to the Youth Services section of the library. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian III in accordance with established departmental/divisional policies and procedures, and with considerable latitude in the use of independent judgment and decision making accomplishing daily activities. During occasions of local emergencies, this position shall be required to perform emergency tasks which may result in extended work hours as well as extended periods of time away from family members.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

According to staff assignment, the Librarian I performs a variety of related functions as may be determined from the following:

  • In a courteous manner, answers reference and reader advisory questions in person, by telephone, and electronically by identifying and retrieving correct information and appropriate sources.
  • Develops and presents programs and activities (in-house and outreach) for library users in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Develops material displays, signs, posters and flyers.
  • Utilizes the Library’s print and digital resources to retrieve information for patrons and escorts patrons to areas of the Library to assist in retrieval of requested materials.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of computers, eReaders, tablets and smart phones to instruct patrons on downloadable library services.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in technology software and equipment necessary to complete job duties (i.e. virtual meeting software).
  • Maintains awareness of library resources and services and effectively promotes those services to patrons.
  • Conducts tours and provides general library instruction and orientation to children, teens, and/or adults.
  • Assists in Departmental/Divisional projects and services, such as collection development, acquisitions, use of online computer services, and preparation and presentation of programs and activities.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of all Departmental/Divisional policies and procedures and the City’s Personnel Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains effective communications and working relationships with other library personnel, Pinellas Public Library Cooperative, St. Petersburg College, and community members.
  • Performs other job-related duties that are consistent with assigned Division responsibilities.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree.  Relevant library experience preferred. Proficient in the use of basic technology. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in a clear and courteous manner to the public and other staff members. Ability to work varying daily work schedules, including nights and weekends. 

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS

Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS

May require lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to approximately twenty-five (25) pounds. Ability to set up program rooms for library programs, including, but not limited to setting up tables, chairs, and operating the movable walls.
