Job Description

Paraprofessional library position, which involves performing various administrative, clerical, technical, or skilled tasks in the Circulation Section. Duties involve a variety of tasks which are performed in accordance with established Library policies, procedures, and practices, but which require the application of independent judgment, creative thinking and clerical knowledge.  Essential job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • In the absence of the Circulation Supervisor, oversees the operation of the Circulation Section and handles any questions or problems that arise with patrons, college students, faculty, staff and other Library users.
  • Sets and distributes work schedules for Circulation Section staff.
  • Assists Circulation Supervisor in recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers and other temporary help.
  • Trains new employees in the Circulation Section as assigned by the Circulation Supervisor.
  • Oversees material handling; checks in returned materials; shelves returned books and other materials; reads shelves and checks for missing items.
  • Prepares a variety of related reports, correspondence, and documents.
  • Assists in preparation for opening and closing of Library depending on assigned work schedule; sorts materials for check-in according to library of origin; prepares materials for return to other libraries; distributes and/or secures cash, receipts, etc., including balancing of cash register at close of business and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assists the public in a courteous manner, in person, electronically and on the telephone, and answers questions and provides information as appropriate.
  • Assists Library patrons by registering and verifying addresses, typing registrations and notices, purging registration files; re-registration functions for those patrons with expired, lost, or damaged cards.
  • Compiles, maintains, and reports statistics as directed.  
  • Assists Circulation Supervisor in scheduling and monitoring the use of the Program rooms, including responding to inquiries by phone, electronically and in-person, determining and collecting rental fees, record-keeping, communicating with Division staff and campus administration and assuring rooms are prepared for use regarding availability of tables, chairs, equipment and placement of movable walls.
  • Provides occasional service desk coverage in other sections, as assigned.

Pay Range: $15.94 - $23.91 per hour

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Minimum of two (2) years related library experience. Proficient in the use of technology. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in a clear and courteous manner to the public and other staff members. Ability to work varying daily work schedules.
