Job Description
Civil Service Title- Community Coordinator
The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City.
The Community Coordinator will support the Executive Director, Director, and Program Manager of Community Affairs in planning, coordinating, and delivering community outreach for multiple, simultaneous NYC Department of Transportation Division of Bridges capital and maintenance projects throughout the five boroughs.
The selected candidate will help ensure that residents, businesses, elected officials, community boards, government agencies, and other stakeholders receive accurate and timely information regarding bridge rehabilitation, reconstruction, painting, maintenance, and other infrastructure activities.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Develop and implement community outreach strategies for bridge rehabilitation, reconstruction, painting, maintenance, and other municipal infrastructure projects.
Provide guidance, coordination, and administrative support to Community Construction Liaisons assigned to projects in one or more boroughs.
Assist with onboarding and training new Community Construction Liaisons on agency policies, outreach procedures, reporting requirements, documentation standards, and communication protocols.
Review, edit, and track important notices, construction bulletins, brochures, presentations, fact sheets, detour information, and other public-facing materials.
Verify that public notifications accurately reflect construction schedules, traffic changes, pedestrian and bicycle impacts, parking restrictions, detours, work hours, and other project conditions.
Coordinate the timely review, approval, translation, printing, and distribution of project notices, flyers, brochures, and No Parking signs.
Monitor project schedules, construction updates, and two-week look-ahead reports to identify upcoming activities requiring public notification or stakeholder coordination.
Attend construction progress meetings, all-agency meetings, community board meetings, elected officials’ meetings, and other stakeholder engagements.
Prepare meeting agendas, presentations, talking points, correspondence, meeting minutes, action items, and project summaries.
Respond to inquiries and complaints from residents, businesses, property owners, elected officials, community boards, civic organizations, and other stakeholders.
Coordinate with project managers, resident engineers, consultants, contractors, and agency personnel to research concerns, obtain accurate information, develop appropriate responses, and track issues through resolution.
Conduct field visits to project sites and surrounding communities to evaluate construction impacts, verify the placement of notices and signage, distribute outreach materials, and engage affected stakeholders.
Establish and maintain working relationships with elected officials, community boards, government agencies, first responders, Business Improvement Districts, civic associations, businesses, schools, houses of worship, property managers, and other community organizations.
Maintain and regularly update stakeholder databases, project contact lists, inquiry and complaint logs, outreach records, distribution lists, and other tracking systems.
Maintain current contact information for elected officials, key agency personnel, regional organizations, Business Improvement Districts, community groups, and other project stakeholders.
Maintain and analyze records of bridge-strike incidents involving commercial vehicles and assist with related research and community coordination.
Maintain records of snow-, ice-, and winter-related complaints and research reported locations to determine whether they are included in applicable snow-removal plans.
Research, document, and track inquiries received through the DOT’s ARTS system and other approved inquiry-management platforms.
Assist with preparing and distributing project updates through email, printed materials, presentations, websites, and approved social media platforms.
Develop content for approved social media platforms and monitor online activity for project-related questions, concerns, and emerging community issues.
Review outreach materials for accuracy, consistency, grammar, formatting, accessibility, and compliance with agency standards.
Track outreach commitments, outstanding inquiries, meeting action items, and project deliverables to ensure timely follow-up and completion.
Assist with coordinating public information sessions, community meetings, special events, and other outreach activities.
Prepare and maintain records of stakeholder engagement activities, including meetings, telephone calls, emails, field visits, and material distributions.
Manage multiple assignments, competing priorities, and time-sensitive requests while meeting established deadlines.
Provide coverage for assigned projects and Community Construction Liaisons, as necessary.
Perform special assignments and other related duties, as required.

Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
