Job Description
The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is seeking an Engagement and Operations Coordinator to support the Bureau of Commercial Waste in the implementation of Commercial Waste Zones (CWZ), a major citywide regulatory program established by Local Law 199 of 2019. This law fundamentally restructures how commercial waste is collected across New York City and affects every business generating commercial waste. CWZ represent one of the City’s most significant waste management reforms in decades, improving safety, environmental performance, service reliability, and operational efficiency in the private waste industry while supporting a regulated and competitive marketplace. Successful implementation requires coordinated engagement with thousands of businesses across New York City and supports policies that directly impact the City’s commercial sector, waste management infrastructure, and related economic activity. The selected candidate will work closely with Bureau leadership and staff to support the rollout of Commercial Waste Zones through business engagement, operational tracking, and program monitoring activities.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Conduct outreach and distribute public educational materials to New York City businesses to support implementation of Commercial Waste Zones and related commercial waste programs.
- Provide technical assistance and interpretation of program requirements, policies, and regulations to businesses and stakeholders in office and on-site.
- Support implementation of engagement strategies by conducting outreach activities, stakeholder engagement, and field-based program support.
- Draft, coordinate, and distribute communications to businesses to inform them of Commercial Waste Zones, program requirements, and other commercial waste initiatives.
- Conduct analysis of engagement activities, operational data, and field observations to support program planning, policy implementation, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Log engagement activities (e.g., site visits, cases, events) in Department systems, including Salesforce and other tracking platforms, and meet established service level agreements (SLAs) for timely documentation and follow-up.
- Provide support for other Bureau functions and special projects as assigned. May require evening or weekend work, as relevant.
