Job Description
The City of Merritt has an exciting full-time opportunity for seasonal student employees with our Public Works department this upcoming spring and summer season (May to September).
Student employees work with our Public Works team to keep the City’s grounds, sidewalks, streets, roads and other public areas maintained and ready for enjoyment by our City’s residents and visitors.
In this role, you might encounter various weather conditions and physically demanding work such as sweeping, shoveling, digging, assisting in maintenance and repairs as well as operating tools and equipment.
Funding for this position is provided by the government of Canada, through the Canada Summer Jobs program and to be eligible for this opportunity, applicants must meet the qualifications listed below.
Qualifications
- To qualify for this Canada Summer Jobs opportunity, applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment. Applicants must be Canadian Citizens, permanent residents, or persons on who refugee protection has been conferred under the Act. Qualifications are set by the Canada Summer Jobs program.
- Applicants must be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations. International students are not eligible for this opportunity unless a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident.
- Any Occupational First Aid certification and/or safety training would be assets to your application.
- Physical ability to carry out the work, a strong work ethic and a safety mindset are essential.
- Preference will be awarded to students who demonstrate previous experience working in a Public Works labourer capacity within a municipal setting.
- We are looking for students who demonstrate initiative, follow direction and work well within a team.
To qualify, students must intend to work full-time in the summer and return to school in September.
Successful applicants will have a valid BC Driver’s license, a safe and responsible driving abstract and a clear Police Information Check.
Additional Information
This is a full-time summer position with hours of work outlined in the Collective Agreement between the City of Merritt and CUPE Local 900. The current rate of pay is $21.25 per hour.
