Job Description

Casual Public Works Outside Workers (Labourers) take pride in contributing to the success of the team. They work in all weather conditions to maintain Merritt’s public grounds so they can be enjoyed by our City’s residents and visitors throughout each season of the year.

As a Casual Public Works Outside Worker (Term), you will assist in maintaining the City parks, landscapes, sidewalks, streets, roads, the cemetery, compost, airport, lawn bowling and ball diamonds. With your customer-service orientation, your duties may include landscaping, planting bulbs, shrubs, weeding gardens, pruning, raking and helping the team to repair potholes, concrete, bricks, and snow removal. You will run small equipment such as mowers, weedwhackers, skid steers and you may drive light-duty trucks or other equipment related to the work.

Casual employees are scheduled on an as-needed basis to relieve employees who are on leaves, vacation, or during peak periods of increased workload; there are no regularly scheduled hours or guarantee of hours.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • The ability to work safely and efficiently.
  • Knowledge and experience in the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in related maintenance and the proper and safe operation of various hand and power tools and other equipment related to the work. 
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to deal tactfully, courteously and accurately with the public and Municipal staff, work effectively within a team.
  • Enthusiastic, positive attitude and customer-service orientation.
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot.
  • Sound judgement to perform duties as assigned and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to keep simple records of the work performed.
  • Sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination to perform heavy manual outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Hold a valid BC (Class 5) driver’s license.
  • For new hires and those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, employment is conditional on a satisfactory policy information check.

Additional Information

The rate of pay is set at $31.43 per hour (2025 rate) with a 14% in lieu of benefits and well-being benefits including access to the employee and family assistance plan (EAP) and exclusive perks program.
