Job Description
Reporting to the Director of Public Works or designate, the Engineering Technologist will collect infrastructure data for the City of Merritt’s GIS system, prepare and/or coordinate municipal infrastructure planning reports through thorough filed inspections, implement detailed analysis of existing and proposed infrastructure and compile and maintain the City’s record drawings and infrastructure reports.
The Engineering Technologist will support the Public Works and Planning and Development departments with troubleshooting infrastructure and development-related issues and work collaboratively with other municipal staff and departments. In addition, the Engineering Technologist will be responsible for development and ongoing maintenance of the asset management program.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge - Education, Training and Experience
This role is ideal for a highly motivated individual who is passionate about performing technical functions of a civil engineering nature. The ideal candidate will possess:
- Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized educational institution, or equivalent academic training and experience.
- One or more years of experience in civil/municipal engineering field specifically related to project management and contract administration.
- Sound experience in the use of MS Office, GIS, AutoCAD and related software.
- Experience in water/sewer planning and project delivery is considered an asset.
- Thorough knowledge of civil engineering principles, terminology, practices and techniques.
- Considerable knowledge of legislated civil construction codes and regulations.
- Physical ability to stand and walk frequently throughout the day; occasionally attend and inspect construction sites including climbing in and out of ditches and trenches; ability to work in inclement weather.
- A valid BC driver’s license.

- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to deal with contractors and consultants in a professional and timely manner.
- Ability to interpret and apply City and other bylaws, policies, procedures, engineering design standards, and specifications.
- Ability to work well as part of a team and independently.

This position requires 40 hours of work per week.
Additional Information
This is a position is within the CUPE local bargaining unit with a wage of $42.02 per hour [certified] (2024 rate).
