The City of Americus operates under the City Manager form of government. Policy making and legislative authority are vested in the governing body which consists of a Mayor and six council members all elected on a nonpartisan basis. Council members serve four-year staggered terms, with three council members elected every two years. The Mayor is elected at large to serve a four-year term. The six council members are elected by district. The governing body is responsible for passing ordinances, adopting the budget and appointing the City Manager, Municipal Court Judge and the City Attorney. The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the governing body and for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the government.

Job Description

The City of Americus is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Financial Specialist. The beginning salary for this position starts at $39,716.00 annually and could go up to $50,439.00 annually according to experience and qualifications. 

Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to: professional accounting work, including auditing, analyzing, and verifying fiscal records and reports, preparing financial and statistical reports, providing information to City staff regarding practices and procedures, and reconciling general ledger accounts; assists in preparing the City’s annual budgets; preparing year-end audit reports and schedules; knowledge of payroll: and performing related work as required; more specifically including: Processing and creating journal entries, performing end-of-period closing functions, back up of the payroll function, assisting with the annual audit, receipting and posting revenue and serving in the absence of the Accounting Manager, and performing duties normally performed by the Accounting Manager, depending on the length of the absence.

Qualifications

Requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting or closely related field; requires two years’ experience in government accounting, finance or closely related experience; Experience in generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines, budget development and management principles are a plus. Requirements may be any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
