Animal Care and Control (ACC) is the municipal agency responsible for the City’s public health and animal welfare needs. As an open-door shelter that accepts any San Francisco animal, domestic or wild, regardless of age, species, temperament or health, ACC intakes approximately 10,000 animals per year and responds to more than 12,000 calls for service every year.  Aside from sheltering thousands of animals every year, the staff enforces local and state laws pertaining to animal welfare; provides animal care, rescue and veterinary services; protects the public from dangerous animals; and licenses dogs and commercial dog walkers. ACC has an annual budget of $8.5 million, a staff of approximately 50 and 200 volunteers. 

Job Description

The 0952 Deputy Director reports to the Director of Animal Care & Control and acts as assistant head of the department.  The deputy assists with the overall management of the department and is the primary designee to act on behalf of the Director when they are not available.

Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that determine which animals will be made available to the public, which will require alternative placement, and which will be humanely euthanized.
  • Ensures that the shelter meets the highest animal care standards as determined by national humane organizations, federal and state law, and public perception. 
  • Manages all aspects of field operations, including calls for service, patrols, investigations, and enforcement of animal neglect and abuse cases.
  • Manages front counter operations, including licensing, permitting, and other regulatory programs.
  • Manages volunteer and outreach programs.
  • Supervises staff responsible for the care of 10,000 animals each year, including domestic, wild and exotic species.
  • Works effectively with the department’s adoption partners, volunteers and other animal control agencies; and plays a key role in maintaining the City’s live release rate. 
  • Works with other law enforcement agencies within and outside of San Francisco to improve compliance.
  • Manages a budget of $8.5 million.

 

Appointment Type

The position is a Permanent-Exempt (PEX) appointment.  This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

1.  Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in biological science, veterinary science, animal husbandry, public or business administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.  AND

2.  Experience: Five  (5) years of supervisory experience supervising in animal care or a closely related field; AND

3.  License: Possession of a valid California class C driver's license; AND

4.  Certification: Within the first year of employment, the appointee must successfully complete a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) Certified P.C. 832 Module. 

Substitution: Certification in animal training or veterinary medicine (RVT) may substitute for two years of a college education.

Desired Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of experience in law enforcement or
  • Five (5) years of experience in animal care.

Compensation: $134,446 to $171,600 annually
