Job Description

Under general direction of a licensed architect, an Architectural Associate II performs comprehensive architectural duties in connection with the design and preparation of preliminary and final working designs and drawings, cost estimates, the preparation and coordination of related building specifications, programming and the construction, or alteration, repair and maintenance of various building projects; may plan and supervise the work of subordinate architectural personnel.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties:

  • Prepares construction documents, including design details and specifications; and oversees the preparation of preliminary plans and detailed drawings for highly complex building projects using electronic architectural drafting and/or 3D modeling software for building information modeling (BIM).
  • Reviews and coordinates the progress of the design work of consultant architects, engineers and other architectural personnel to insure the drawings and specifications are properly coordinated.
  • Reviews and coordinates complex and difficult programming and planning documents and final architectural construction documents for a wide variety of projects.
  • Checks and reviews drawings and specifications prepared by consulting architects and engineers for conformance with prescribed standards, codes, project goals and requirements.
  • Prepares materials and assessments in relation to construction budgets and cost estimates; and assists in monitoring the size and scope of projects to meet budget parameters.
  • May be required to perform important duties in connection with the architectural phases of interior design and construction management.
  • During construction, performs field observations of new construction, renovation, alteration, maintenance and repair projects; assists with analysis of problems that arise; evaluates, determines and recommends optimum alternative solutions (through RFI’s, PCO’s, etc.).
  • Participates in the development and advancement of subordinate personnel.
  • Takes field measurements and documents existing conditions on complex projects; coordinates the incorporation of data provided by other professionals, such as surveyors and geotechnical engineers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Architecture or an architecture related field such as Environmental Design or Interior Architecture, or a professional degree in Architecture (Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture) from an accredited college or university.

Experience:
Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in the architectural field, including architectural design, architectural detailing, structural analysis, cost analysis, specification preparation, coordination and review, construction administration, and field observation of architectural construction projects, all under the direction of a licensed architect. Two (2) years must have been served as a job captain, project lead, or in a role of increased responsibility on a project. (Experience in a lower-level class (i.e., 5260, 5261, or 5265) is considered qualifying.)

License and Certification:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Note(s):

  • One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
  • A valid out-of-state driver’s license is acceptable during the application process. A valid California driver's license must be obtained prior to appointment and maintained throughout employment.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Candidates must pass all phases of this examination in order to be ranked on the eligible list.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) (Weight Qualifying):
Candidates will be required to submit an MQSQ at any point in the application, examination or departmental selection process. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications. Applicants must also complete the Preliminary Questions with their application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience and training. Any experience or education field that lists see resume will not be accepted.

Supplemental Questionnaire & Portfolio Evaluation (Weight 100%):
Candidates deemed qualified will be provided specific instructions to submit a supplemental questionnaire and portfolio.  This includes submittal of the best examples of a candidate’s work, which highlights their design and technical skills from their portfolio up to a maximum of 10 pages in PDF. The evaluation has been designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas, which may include, but is not limited to: knowledge of architectural theory, practice and procedures, construction methods and materials and their application to architectural and designing phases of construction projects, construction project building codes, laws, ordinances and regulations applicable; ability to initiate, prepare and review architectural plans, specifications and cost estimates, to apply architectural design principles and techniques to solve complex architectural problems, to prepare contract documents, technical and professional reports, work effectively with professional engineers, architects, contractors and other professional groups; analytical ability and professional judgment; skill in applying of architectural design and theory to practical architectural problems and preparing complex architectural contract documents, in the use of electronic architectural drafting and/or 3D modeling software for building information modeling (BIM). Failure to complete the questionnaire and submit PDF portfolio examples may result in disqualification or a lower score.

Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Ten (10) Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Customs Clearance:
