Under general supervision, the Electrical Inspector performs physical inspections of electrical installations in buildings and other structures to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances, and performs other related work as assigned.

Job Description

The essential functions of this job include the following: examines plans and permit applications for compliance with adopted codes pertaining to the installation of electrical distribution, life safety systems and utilization equipment; checks and assists in mathematical calculations and job layouts of electrical installations; inspects workmanship and materials to ensure conformity with electrical codes and standards; investigates complaints of electrical violations; gives depositions and testifies in court litigation involving electrical code violations; prepares reports based on field inspection records and conducts follow-up inspections; performs field surveys; and drives a City vehicle to inspection sites, meetings, hearings, and emergency activities.

Nature of work requires utilizing a computer, PDA, and other electronic devices for routine inspection tracking, research, and report development. Employees in this Class must be willing to work under construction site conditions.

Qualifications

Experience:

1.A - One year of verifiable experience as an electrical inspector in a public jurisdiction, AND three years of experience as a journey level electrician; OR

1.B - A combination of apprenticeship in the trade and journey level experience as an electrician totaling six years ; OR

1.C - Three years of verifiable experience as an electrical contractor with a C-10 license issued by the California State Contractors Licensing Board, AND three years of verifiable experience as a journey-level electrician totaling six years.

License and Certification:

2 - Possession of a valid driver license.

One year of experience is equivalent to 2000 hours.

Condition of Employment

Possession of the Electrical Inspection Certificate issued by the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) or International Code Council (ICC) is required within one (1) year of appointment. Inspectors must maintain the certification as a condition of continued employment.

Written Test (Weight: 100%): Qualified candidates will be scheduled for the written test which is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to: Knowledge of electrical codes; knowledge of field installation standards; knowledge of safety methods and procedures; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, industry professionals and the general public; and ability to prepare and maintain accurate and clear reports, records and correspondence. This is a standardized written multiple-choice examination. In accordance with Civil Service Rule 111.11.4, inspection privileges do not apply to the questions and answers in this examination. Candidate scores on this examination may also be applied to other announcements involving other job titles, when directed by the Human Resources Director.

Selection Procedures Notes:

1. Compensation and Benefits: Positions at the San Francisco Unified School District may vary with those provided by the City and County of San Francisco.

2. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance: Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to provide a complete employment history for the past ten (10) years and an explanation of all gaps in employment during that period. The past ten (10) years of the candidate’s employment will be verified. In addition, candidates will be required to undergo a criminal history check, including FBI fingerprints, in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

3. Customs Clearance: Positions in this class may require that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area. An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced. Employment in positions in this class requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire, and maintain a Customs Access Seal. Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination. Failure to acquire or maintain customs access, a requirement for this position, may be a basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. Customs Access Seal requirements and procedures are located in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 19, Part 122, Sections 181 or 189.

Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 12 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
