The Recreation & Park Department is hiring multiple positions in job class 9910 – Public Service Trainee – Workreation Youth Employment Program – School Year 2021/2022.  Interested applicants are encouraged to apply immediately.  Receipt of applications may close at any time, but not before October 12, at 5:00 PM.

This is a Temporary Exempt appointment. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process, is considered “at will” and serves at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

Job Description

Assignments are in various neighborhood park and recreation center locations and include activities such as arts and crafts, sports, cooking, gardening, facility support and so much more.  The basic work week schedule is Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday and up to 10 hours weekly.  Schedules will vary depending on the assignment and may include evenings and weekends. These positions are subject to budgetary constraints.

The school year program will run early January 2022 through mid-May 2022.

Employees must attend mandatory virtual workshops, trainings, and orientation sessions.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

1.     Applicant must be a currently enrolled high school student between 14 and 18 years of age as of December 27, 2021.  (Verification of age will be required); AND

2.     Applicant must possess a Social Security Card, valid picture identification, and documents that establish both identity and employment eligibility, such as a birth certificate, state issued proof of identity or proof of a legal right to work in the United States; AND

3.     Applicant must be a San Francisco resident AND currently attending high school in San Francisco during the academic year 2021-2022 (Proof may be requested at any time).

All applicants MUST be able to work at least 10 hours per week.

Successful candidates will be required to obtain a Work Permit. HOWEVER, students should NOT request a work permit until notified of a job offer.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in leadership, volunteer work, participation in organized art or sport activities; ability to type, word processing and/or computer graphics skills; bilingual skills, including American Sign Language (ASL); strong verbal communication skills; ability to write well; participation in a sport, art, or day camp and experience working in ethnically and socially diverse communities are desired. Of particular interest is direct experience in recreation/aquatics, gardening or office/clerical work.
