Job Description
Under supervision, and in accordance with established policies and procedures, performs various routine phases of technical library work; exercises work direction over subordinate personnel; and performs related duties as required.
Requires responsibility for: Explaining and carrying out established methods and procedures; making regular contacts with the general public, outside organizations and library personnel in connection with library operations and activities; and preparing and/or maintaining various files and records.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED
The classification of Library Technical Assistant II receives supervision from a Librarian, and exercises supervision over subordinate technical and clerical library personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Supervises subordinate personnel and coordinates their assignments to meet the needs of the department.
2. Processes orders, overdue accounts, library card applications, requests for library material, new books, additional copies, serials, and other library material.
3. Assists patrons in person, over the telephone and by correspondence regarding library policies, procedures and directional information; under supervision, assists patrons with routine questions and with the location of library material.
4. Searches for library materials; obtains information from bibliographies, files, records and other sources.
5. Does preliminary cataloging; makes proper entry of new serials; assigns Cutter numbers;
6. Files; assists in revising files; prepares and/or maintains various files and records; writes correspondence; types; receives and records money.
7. Writes or telephones vendors and publishers regarding invoices and claims; follows up on these communications as necessary.
8. Charges and discharges library material.
9. Assists in opening and closing the branch or department and in keeping it orderly and pleasant; assists in inventorying the collection; assists in checking shelves for proper placement of books and for books in need of repair.
10. Collaborates in the creation, preparation, and display of various reference materials and resources.
11. May assist in preparing an exhibit, display or other publicity material.
12. May create, maintain, and troubleshoot technical issues related to the Library's website, intranet, and other electronic media systems; create, prepare, and organize audio, video, images, and graphics.
13. May provide technical training to other Library staff.
14. Under the general supervision of a librarian, may be responsible for the day-to-day operations of a reading center.
Qualifications
Experience/Education: An A.A. degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Library Information Technology AND one (1) year of full-time verifiable experience in technical library work in the areas of technical services, circulation, cataloging and/or information services equivalent to the duties performed by class 3616 Library Technical Assistant I in the City and County of San Francisco.
OR
Certificate: Completion of a Library Information Technology certificate program from an accredited college or university AND two (2) years of full-time verifiable experience in library work, at least one (1) year of which must have included technical library workin the areas of technical services, circulation, cataloging and/or information services, equivalent to the duties performed by class 3616 Library Technical Assistant I in the City and County of San Francisco.
OR
Experience: Three (3) years of full-time verifiable experience in library work, at least one (1) year of which must have included technical library work in the areas of technical services, circulation, cataloging and/or information services, equivalent to the duties performed by class 3616 Library Technical Assistant I in the City and County of San Francisco.
Special Conditions: Some positions in this class may require possession of bilingual skills. A language proficiency test may be administered prior to appointment to those positions; Employees may be required to push, pull and lift with assistance objects weighing fifty (50) pounds or more; Some positions in this class may require possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
The above minimum qualifications reflect special conditions associated with the position(s) to be filled. They may differ from the standard minimum qualifications associated with this class code.
Note: Some positions in this class are subject to irregular work schedules and may require evening and/or weekend work; and require constant public contact. Positions in this classification may be required to work at various locations within the Library system.

Selection Procedures: After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:
Library Technical Assistant Multiple Choice Examination (Weight 80%): Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a written examination designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of library procedures, reference aids, library terminology, electronic resources, software applications, basic web editing and design, office procedures, the role of a public and/or school library in the community; ability to lead supporting staff; attention to detail and accuracy, including money handling procedures, operate office equipment, ability to learn and deliver training and support to others for software, hardware, and electronic media; ability to problem solve, multitask and manage deadlines, ability to establish and maintain relationships, ability to deal courteously and effectively with others, ability to maintain records and file, retrieve, code and index data and information, ability to communicate in writing clearly and concisely; read, review, write, and understand information such as forms, documents, instructions, and/or reports in English; ability to understand, give, and follow oral instructions in English.
A passing score must be achieved on the Multiple Choice Examination in order to continue in the selection process.
Basic Supervisory Exam (BSE) (Weight 20%): Candidates will be administered a written multiple-choice examination that includes test items that relate to various supervisory practices and procedures (e.g., directing subordinates, delegating tasks to subordinates, providing customer service, demonstrating appropriate supervisory/leadership behavior, addressing and/or evaluating subordinate issues, behavior and performance, etc.) and well as reading comprehension items.
This is a standardized multiple-choice examination. In accordance with Civil Service Rule 111.11.4, inspection privileges do not apply to the questions and answers in this examination.
Both multiple-choice exams will be administered remotely. These computer-administered exams can be taken from home. Candidates must have access to a computer and a reliable internet connection to participate. Candidates will be scheduled for a specific date and time to complete the examination.
The score(s) you achieve on the Written Multiple Choice Exam and the Basic Supervisory Exam shall be valid and 'banked' for three years, starting from the date of the examinations. This means that, during this three-year time period, you will not be required to re-take these tests should you apply and be found eligible for a future announcement for which these particular tests are used. If the selection processes for a future announcement is held within one year of the date of these examinations and it includes the Written Multiple Choice Exam or the Basic Supervisory Exam your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. However, after one year, you have the option to either (a) apply your test score to the other announcement or (b) re-take the test. Re-testing is permitted no sooner than one year from the date of the examination and only in association with your eligibility for another announcement for which this test is used. Please note that, should you re-test, your re-test score would become your official score since it is the most recent (even if it turns out to be lower than your original score).
Candidates must receive passing scores on both the Core Multiple Choice and BSE exams to be placed on the resulting eligible list.
The hiring department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.
Eligible List/Score Report:
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 12 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
