Job Description

About San Francisco Water Division:

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s San Francisco Water Division (Water Department) is responsible for directing approximately 322 employees in the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system within the City and County of San Francisco. These activities include, but are not limited to: operating and maintaining 28 pump stations, 11 reservoirs, 13 storage tanks, 19 regulators as well as other ancillary appurtenances and equipment; installing, repairing and maintaining over one thousand miles of water distribution mains including service connections and meters; four water systems comprised of the Potable, Emergency Fire Water System (EFWS), Recycled and Groundwater;  engineering and designing new main and feeder extensions; managing over 1,000 acres of city owned property and rights-of-ways; and responding to all two-alarm or greater fires to assist the Fire Department in maintaining adequate water volume and consistent pressure while fighting fires.

Position Description: 

Under general supervision, performs inspection, maintenance, repair, installation, and testing of a variety of electrical systems and equipment, up to 600 Volts energized and 601 Volts to 301,000 Volts de-energized, used at the water, wastewater, power, and hydroelectrical facilities of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

Essential Duties: 

  1. Inspects, maintains, repairs, installs, and tests a variety of electrical equipment, up to 15,000 volts at utility facilities:
  2. Maintains, and repairs motor starters, including variable frequency drives rated up to 15,000 volts.
  3. Make electrical installations, maintenance and repairs in connection and conjunction with SFPUC WATER SCADA Group.  
  4. Install, troubleshoot, and repair radio/life safety/security systems including CCTV.
  5. Erects and uses ladders, scaffolds, staging, aerial lift trucks, light towers, and other related equipment.
  6. Makes as built and shop drawings of electrical installations.
  7. Prepares and submits reports for time, material used and completed work.
  8. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education: Completion of a recognized five-year Inside Wireman Apprenticeship Program or other verifiable recognized five-year training program specific to industrial electrical equipment.

Experience: Two (2) years of verifiable journey-level electrician experience in the installation, maintenance, and operation of high voltage (above 600 volts).

License and Certification: Possession of a valid California (Class C) driver license.

Substitution: Additional verifiable journey-level electrician experience in the installation, servicing, repair, maintenance, and operation of high voltage (above 600 volts) can be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Important Note:

  • One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
