Under general direction, the Maintenance Machinist performs preventive, routine and emergency maintenance and repair of a variety of heavy and light equipment, related systems and components.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools, stationary as well as portable manual machine tools and Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machine tools such as mills, lathes, drills, saws etc.
2. Rebuilds, refinishes, modifies, and/or fabricates replacement parts for pumps, generators, cranes, parking meters, transit vehicles/railway coaches and railway cars, fire alarm boxes, compressors, dredges, pipes lines, barges, ferry terminals and their components.
3. Maintains and repairs a variety of instruments and mechanical equipment, including valves, castings, and various metal parts.
4. Diagnoses, installs, inspects and tests machinery, parts and equipment.
5. Reads and interprets schematic drawings, blueprints, and plans.
6. Prepares and maintains records and forms documenting work performed.
7. Dismantles and assembles light and heavy machines and/or equipment.
8. Manufactures/fabricates parts based on samples.
9. Performs other related duties and responsibilities.

Nature of Work: Some positions may involve exposure to adverse physical and working condition and lifting objects weighing in excess of 70 pounds. Incumbents will be required to work varying hours and/or shifts, including weekends, evening and holidays in a 24 hour/7 days-a week operation.

Experience:

• Completion of a recognized four (4) year Machinist's apprenticeship program and two (2) years of fulltime verifiable experience as a journey- level Maintenance Machinist performing duties equivalent to Job Code 7332 Maintenance Machinist (with primary responsibility in maintenance/repair and machine tool operations) OR
• A combination of trade-related training (certificate program or military training program) and fulltime verifiable experience as a journey-level Maintenance Machinist performing duties equivalent to Job Code 7332 Maintenance Machinist (with primary responsibility in maintenance/repair and machine tool operations) totaling six (6) years AND

License: Possession of a valid California driver's license at the time of appointment

Substitution:

Completion of a CA Division of Apprenticeship Standards recognized Maintenance Machinist apprenticeship program evidenced by issuance of a Certificate of Completion of the apprenticeship program under the appropriate authority will substitute for the six (6) years combined work experience.

Applicants who are anticipated to complete such an apprenticeship program within the 12 months following the filing deadline will be admitted to the examination and will be placed under “general waiver” until the Certificate of Completion is issued.

Notes:

A.  For positions at the Port of San Francisco, the journey-level Maintenance Machinist experience indicated under minimum qualifications #1 and #2 MUST have been in the maintenance and operation of diesel engine  equipment. Applicants who are interested in being considered for the positions at the Port, please list such job duties and equipment in the "Experience" Section of the application.

B.  For positions at the Water Department - Water Supply and Treatment Division, the journey-level Maintenance Machinist experience indicated under minimum qualifications #1 and #2 MUST have been in the maintenance and operation of valves 24” or greater, valve operators, and centrifugal pumps. Applicants who are interested in being considered for the positions at the Water Supply and Treatment Division should list such job duties and equipment in the "Experience" Section of the application.

C.  Trade-related training refers to programs such as machine tool technology program.

D.  Experience solely as a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist, Numerical Control (NC) Machinist or Machine Operator (without Manual Maintenance Machinist experience) will not be considered as qualifying.

E.  Candidates who successfully pass the examination for this recruitment and are anticipated to complete an approved CA Division of Apprenticeship Standards recognized Maintenance Machinist apprenticeship program within 12 months following the filing deadline will be placed on the eligible list under “general waiver” and will not be eligible to compete for positions until presentation of their Certificate of Completion. Once presented, the analyst will remove the waiver and the candidate will be eligible to compete in future certifications for the remaining duration of the eligible list.

Selection Procedure:

After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Written Multiple-Choice Examination (Weight: 100%): (General Exam Process)

Candidates deemed eligible and admitted to the examination process will be administered a written multiple-choice test designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not limited to: knowledge of machining methods and principles, knowledge of basic shop math, knowledge of safety rules, knowledge of materials, and ability to read/modify schematic drawings, blueprints etc.

This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review.

Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list/score report of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list/score report, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list/score report shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list/score report is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. 

The duration of the eligible list/score report resulting from this examination process will be 12 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

Medical Examination Testing:

Candidates who are being considered for appointment for positions which may be required to pass a medical examination. Candidates who cannot meet the medical requirement will be placed under waiver until this requirement is met.
