Job Description

Under direct supervision of the Network Management, the Network Engineer Senior will lead a team of engineers supporting the City's WAN comprising of over 25,000 employees and over 60 Departments including Public Safety systems. The incumbent will provide technical leadership and assumes technical responsibility for completion of major projects or serves as technical authority, and perform and reviews complex work involving analysis, planning, designing, implementation, maintenance, troubleshooting complex large City WAN.

Essential Duties:

  • Perform architectural reviews and assists in providing recommendations and designs related to the City's key connectivity methods including WAN and LAN infrastructure, Datacenter, remote access, extranets / firewalls /URL Filtering, wireless, and Voice over IP.
  • Analyze, plan, implement/configure, troubleshoot, and maintain the City's MPLS based WAN infrastructure up to the customer site, including incorporating Quality of Service (QOS) into network layers.
  • Responsible for designing, planning, installation, configuration, documentation, and troubleshooting the City's new and existing enterprise network infrastructure including the CCSF Fiber WAN and Datacenters.
  • Provide senior level technical expertise in the implementation of new client LANs.
  • Provide senior level technical expertise in WAN network connectivity to new network installations.
  • Provide senior level technical expertise in the implementation of new Cisco VOIP systems for a 25,000 node deployment.
  • Provide senior level technical expertise in designing, implementing, and maintaining an enterprise wireless network that includes Cisco wireless controllers and Cisco access points.
  • Configure, install and maintain with expert knowledge on Cisco routers, Cisco Nexus series, all enterprise level Cisco catalyst switches including 9000, 6500, and 4500.
  • Configure, install and maintain with senior knowledge on Cisco ASA, and Palo Alto firewalls in High Availability mode.
  • Configure identity management appliances including ISE, and ACS.
  • Configure and maintain DNS appliances such as INFOBLOX.
  • Work closely with department project managers, clients, vendors, and other departmental staff to provide network services for enterprise project and other network services as requested.
  • Implement standards and best practices in disciplines such as network security, network provisioning, and network design.
  • Develop departmental documentation standards.
  • Mentor Senior and Junior Network Engineers.
  • Analyze and configure ACI through its programming API
  • Provide 24-hour on-call support to ensure rapid recovery from software or hardware problems for mission-critical systems and networks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Type:

This Permanent Exempt - Full Time position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointment officer. The anticipated duration of this project position is thirty-six (36) months and will not result in an eligible list or permanent civil service hiring.

Nature of Work:

Incumbent must be willing to work a 40-hour week as determined by the department.  Travel within San Francisco may be required.

The incumbent must be a resident of the State of California or be willing to relocate within 4 weeks of beginning employment with the City and County of San Francisco.

The City and County of San Francisco does not sponsor visas. If you have an F1 student visa, the City will not sponsor the “optional practical training” requirement. All applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are legally able to work in the United States without visa sponsorship by the employer.

Incumbent may be required to provide 24-hour on-call support to ensure rapid recovery from software or hardware problems for mission-critical systems and networks.

Work Location:

Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at the Department of Technology, (1 S Van Ness, Ave San Francisco, CA 94103).  However, there may be situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as necessary.

This position supports remote work. The incumbent may be permitted to work a hybrid schedule with their supervisor’s approval, after which they must work at least two days in the office every two weeks.

Qualifications

Education:

An associate degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter credits/units with a minimum of twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter credits/units in one of the fields above or a closely-related field].

Experience:

Three (3) years of experience analyzing, installing, configuring, enhancing, and/or maintaining the components of an enterprise network.

License and Certification:

Substitution:

Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units/ forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in one of the fields above or a closely related field.

Completion of the 1010 Information Systems Trainee Program may be substituted for the required degree.

Compensation: $70.3125 - $88.4625 (hourly) / $146,250 - $184,002 (annual)
