Public Works currently has vacancies for the position of Survey Assistant II (5312) within our Bureau of Street Use and Mapping (BSM). 

The Bureau of Street Use and Mapping (BSM) ensures that City sidewalks and streets are safe and accessible by permitting and inspecting the use of the public right of way. The bureau also collaborates on the development and execution of citywide initiatives to help businesses thrive and to activate shared public spaces. In addition, the bureau provides surveying services and maintains the official map of the City and County of San Francisco.

Job Description

Under general direction, as Survey Assistant II you will perform journey-level surveying work in the office or the field. You may be asked to provide supervision over the activities of survey staff in the absence of the Survey Associate.

Important and Essential Duties:
As a Survey Assistant II, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Operate surveying instruments by indexing, sighting, calibrating, and reading levels, total station, GPS, and other equipment when conducting cross-sectioning, monumenting, topographic, engineering, boundary, lease, construction, and hydrographic surveys.
  • Perform surveying operations by checking profiles for proper grades, assist in locating property lines and other topographical features (sewers, manholes, catch basins, etc.), reference permanent markers, and take readings/measurements as needed.
  • Use mathematical computations to determine distances, elevations, volumes, angles, areas, traverses, etc., and interpret results.
  • Prepare and maintain survey field notes and official records by recording all necessary data on measurements, readings, problems encountered, recommendations, and other matters to include maintaining records for horizontal and vertical monument control.
  • Read and interpret land-use documents such as, but not limited to, legal descriptions, deeds, title reports, leases, and licenses.
  • May act as Survey Associate in the Associate's absence by supervising and directing survey staff. 
  • Conduct and explain existing survey procedures and methods to survey staff and to the public.
  • Assist in research requests for survey-related data from the public, clients, or staff. 
  • Prepare volumetric calculations for both land removal and water dredging.
  • Locate sub-surface utilities within the tolerances allowed by regulatory agencies by interpreting acquired data using sub-surface utility locating equipment including radio detection equipment, ground penetrating radar equipment, and electromagnetic equipment.
  • Drive a departmental vehicle to work sites to perform survey work.

Working Conditions:
The nature of the work will require some physical effort and manual dexterity occasionally lifting and carrying over 50 pounds and working in adverse weather or working conditions such as working in streets or roads in heavy traffic, in cold and rain.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience, Education and Training:

1. Two (2) years of verifiable surveying experience (either in the office or field) at a level equivalent to the City and County Class 5310 Survey Assistant I; OR

2. One (1) year of verifiable surveying experience (either in the office or field); AND a., b., or c.

     a. One year of verifiable surveying work in Class 5310 Survey Assistant I; OR

     b. An Associate of Science degree with a concentration in Geomatics engineering or related field (see Note below); OR

     c. Possession of a valid Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) license issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors; OR

3. Bachelor of Science Degree in Geomatics or related field (see Note below).

Note:

  • Related educational fields include Geography, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Math, and/or Civil Engineering.

Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.

  • Knowledge and experience in operating surveying instruments (GPS, Laser Scanners, Total Stations, Digital Levels).
  • Experience using Survey Office Software.
  • Experiencing using AutoCAD Civil 3D. 
  • Knowledge of the California Subdivision Map Act.
  • Experience with government agencies in map reviewing (Parcel Map, Record of Surveys, Tract Maps).
