Appointment Type: This is a Category 16, Temporary Exempt (TEX), as-needed position not to exceed six (6) months or 1,040 hours in a fiscal year. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

Bureau of Building and Street Repair - Building Repair Division provides quality professional construction, repair, maintenance, and remodeling for City-owned facilities. We also provide emergency-repair services around the clock, ensuring that police, fire and other public safety operations are fully functional at all times.

Public Works currently has vacancies for on-call/as-needed Glaziers within the Bureau of Building and Street Repair - Building Repair Division.

Job Description

Under general supervision, as a Glazier, you will perform skilled work in cutting, assembling, fitting, setting, fastening, installing, repairing and maintaining glass and plastic sheets and window screens in windows, mirrors, skylights, doors, desktops, showcases, frames, aluminum extrusion window frames; remove and install window film or tinted applications. Glaziers work skillfully and safely to operate numerous shop machinery and equipment to perform assigned glazing activities.

Important and Essential Duties:
Your duties as a Glazier may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Cutting, assembling, fitting, setting, fastening and installing glass, plastic sheets and window screens in windows, skylights, doors, showcases, frames, aluminum extrusion window frames and automotive and transit vehicles.
  • Repairs and maintains broken and leaking windows and skylights.
  • Cutting, grinding and installing glass, desktops and mirrors.
  • Operating shop machinery and equipment used to perform glazing activities, which includes wet sanders, drill presses, edge finishing sanders, powered hand sanders and saws, etc.
  • Documenting your work performed by completing work orders and daily work logs.
  • Installation of aluminum storefront and glazing systems.
  • Safely operating and driving a departmental vehicle to assigned work sites.
  • Removes and installs window film or tinted applications.
  • Operate a JLG type lift and/or scissor lift to perform work at various heights.
  • Operate forklifts to load and off-load materials.

Nature of Work: The nature of the work will require some physical effort and manual dexterity in the use of the fingers, limbs and body; lifting and carrying up to 75lbs; wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); working in adverse weather or working conditions such as dust, cold temperatures, loud or continuous noise; attending specialized training classes, and working any shift including: days, swings, nights, weekends and holidays. Additionally, work at various elevated heights/stories may be required as well as working at correctional and/or health care facilities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Completion of a recognized five (5) year Glazier apprenticeship program.

AND

Experience:
Two (2) years of experience as a journey level Glazier.

AND

License:
Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license.

Substitution:
Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.

Note: One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Valid Driver’s License:
 Applicants must possess a valid State of California driver’s license with no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role. 

Drug Testing Requirement: Applicants for positions in this classification who are not currently employed by the City and County of San Francisco in a safety-sensitive position represented by (Glaziers, Local 718), are required to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. All employees in this classification may also be subject to drug and alcohol testing upon reasonable suspicion or after a work-related accident. Applicants with a positive result from a pre-employment drug test will be restricted from hire in safety-sensitive function positions for six-months after the date of the positive test.
