The Port of San Francisco is an enterprise agency of the City and County of San Francisco and is governed by a Commission of five members appointed by the Mayor. The Port Commission is responsible for overseeing a broad range of waterfront commercial, maritime, and public access facilities that are held in public trust for the people of California. Job Description

Under general supervision, the essential functions of an Ornamental Iron Worker include: performing skilled work in connection with the fabricating, installing, dismantling, maintaining and repairing of structural members, steel rolling doors, chain link fences, fire escapes, drop ladders, hand rails, guard rails, ornamental iron gates and other metal structures; and other job-related duties as required.  Some incumbents may exercise work direction over subordinate personnel assisting or engaging in such work.

The nature of the work requires the ability and physical stamina to: climb and work from ladders and at varying heights up to 220 ft; work on scaffolds and off mechanical high-lifts; stoop and crawl into confined spaces; operate equipment; pass a medical qualification examination for the use of respirators and wear face-fitting respiratory protection; use hand and power tools; use arc welding equipment such as Oxy/Acetylene, MIG and TIG; and lift and carry 50 lbs.  Work may be performed under inclement weather conditions and in potentially hazardous environments under controlled conditions. Candidate also must be proficient in use of computer and associated software programs such as Microsoft Suite and email.

Qualifications

Experience 

Successful completion of a recognized Iron Worker Apprenticeship Program of 3 years and 3 years verifiable journey-level experience as an ornamental iron worker.

OR

A combination of 8 years verifiable training/experience as an ornamental iron worker, of which 3 years must be journey-level;

AND

Possession of valid California driver's license (to be presented at time of appointment). Applicants selected for employment must be insurable and maintain insurability under the department's automobile liability insurance policy.

Important Note(s):

  • One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
