Public Works currently has a vacancy for the position of Arborist Technician Supervisor I (3436) within our Urban Forestry Division.

We oversee the median maintenance, tree planting, and maintenance of 124,000-plus City-owned trees through the voter-backed StreetTreeSF program. San Francisco Public Works is developing StreetTreeSF into an efficient and cost-effective system to maintain street trees, ensuring that all public trees are inspected and pruned routinely and proactively  In addition, crews repair sidewalks and build curb ramps to advance safety and accessibility.

Job Description

Under general direction, you will be responsible for the assignment and supervision of  Arborist technician crews performing various urban forestry maintenance tasks and duties. This includes the removal of trees and other vegetation while performing related duties as needed.

Important and Essential Duties:
As an Arborist Technician Supervisor, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervise and direct a crew of Arborist technicians in the pruning and removal of trees and limbs, exercise judgment in appraising condition of trees, especially with regard to public safety.
  • Supervise the use and maintenance of rigging and other equipment.
  • Operate chipper and drive aerial lift equipment vehicles, heavy loader trucks or other required vehicles, also operate other materials and equipment used in trimming and caring for trees.
  • Maintain a record of work activities, daily timesheets, overtime sheets, vehicle & equipment maintenance records, and prepare required reports.
  • Conduct and document safety training and briefings to ensure compliance with safety standards.  
  • Investigate and respond to complaints, requests, and calls concerning city trees. 
  • Ordering work supplies and equipment. 
  • May occasionally perform Arborist technician duties as needed.

Working conditions:
This position requires responsibility for scheduling work and directing methods and procedures used in topping and trimming trees and other vegetation, involving hazards to employees or public safety. Nature of duties involves occasional participation in tree topping work requiring considerable physical effort and manual dexterity with exposure to accident and injury hazards and disagreeable elements and working conditions.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:
Four (4) years of verifiable experience as an arborist technician. Duties must have included climbing trees of considerable height for the purpose of removing tree limbs, treetops or entire tree. Experience in pruning trees from a ladder is not qualifying experience.

License and Certification:
Possession of a valid California Class B driver license with no air brakes restriction.

Notes:

  • One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
  • Valid Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role. 

Desirable QualificationsThe stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.

  • ISA  (International Society of Arboriculture) Certified Arborist
  • ISA Certified Arborist Municipal Specialist 
  • ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification 
  • ISA Board Certified Master Arborist 
  • Experience using a tree database or work order management software.

The selection process will include an evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will move forward in the recruitment process.

Drug Testing Requirement:
Applicants for positions in this classification who are not currently employed by the City and County of San Francisco in a safety-sensitive position represented by (Laborers, Local 261), are required to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. All employees in this classification may also be subject to drug and alcohol testing upon reasonable suspicion or after a work-related accident. Applicants with a positive result from a pre-employment drug test will be restricted from hire in safety-sensitive function positions for six-months after the date of the positive test.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
Candidates may be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
