Company Description

The San Francisco Department of Public Health’s Tuberculosis (TB) Clinic is accepting applications for full-time, Temporary Exempt position in Class 1406 Senior Clerk.

This Senior Clerk position is a great opportunity for candidates who recently graduated with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution or have some verifiable data experience but need to gain work-related experience in data work assignments, regulations, policies/procedures specific to the department. The position will provide the candidate with experience in implementation, organization, and maintenance of medical records; preparation/maintenance of data reports; assistance with the development of policies/procedures within the section; and focus on data integrity and quality improvement.

Compensation: $29.2625 - $35.5875 Hourly; $60,866.00 - $74,022.00 Yearly

Job Description

Under general supervision of the Program Manager, Tuberculosis Prevention and Control, the 1406 Senior Clerk performs the following duties:

  • Participate in team and clinic-wide quality improvement (LEAN) initiatives
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary professional team that includes clinicians, surveillance staff, outreach workers, and administrative staff
  • Assist program manager with development & implementation of new processes related to surveillance of Tuberculosis.
  • Assist with implementation of data transfer project between clinic/program EMR and database
  • Receive, enter, and organize lab results for clinical review
  • Perform quality control checks of abstracted data; respond to quality control queries and help resolve discrepancies
  • Efficiently and accurately scan, retrieve, data enter medical records
  • Maintain patient records ensuring timeliness and accuracy of information collected.
  • File, maintain and retrieve documents, records, and correspondence in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist with planning, organizing, and implementing of local and regional TB control events.
  • Prepare and distribute documents, spreadsheets and reports for TB related conferences, meetings, and trainings.
  • Coordinate follow-up of evaluation and care of patients
  • Proficiently read and review a variety of documents and forms for completeness and accuracy
  • Create and maintain standard work and workflows in a legible and accurate manner
  • Follow written directions; effectively communicate and understand complex concepts related to public health, policies, and procedures both to and from departmental representatives and the public
  • Exercise tact and maintain poise in resolving disputes and differences arising with the public and other personnel
  • Use a personal computer in a network environment to enter and update data, create documents, and use system applications, e-mail, spreadsheets, word processing and organizer software.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Experience: Two (2) years of clerical experience included preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail

Substitution: Any one of the following may substitute for six (6) months of the required experience:

  • Completion of a clerical training program (240 hours); OR
  • 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university; OR
  • Completion of an approved City and County of San Francisco Clerical Administrative training program (as designated on the job announcement).

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless
otherwise noted.

Desirable Qualification: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring. 

  • Currently enrolled or possession of a bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Public Administration, Public Policy, or a closely related field
  • Interest in public service and public health career goals
  • Can work independently and take initiative, as needed
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Willingness to learn new computer software as needed
  • 6 months experience working with and securing protected health information in a healthcare or public health setting
  • 6 months experience handling and managing medical records
  • Experience abstracting information from medical charts and familiarity with basic medical terminology is highly desirable
