San Francisco Public Works (SF Public Works) currently has an open position for the role of Soft Floor Coverer Supervisor (7394) within our Building Repair Unit.

Building Repair
Provides quality professional construction, repair, and remodeling for City-owned facilities. It also provides emergency-repair services around the clock, ensuring that police, fire, and other public safety operations are always fully functional.

Appointment Type: Temporary Provisional (TPV). This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service examination for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years.

Job Description

Under general guidance and direction, as a Soft Floor Coverer Supervisor, you will supervise the activities of Soft Floor Coverers and other craft workers engaged with the construction, maintenance, repair, and remodeling of buildings and facilities in relation to floors and other surfaces. You will oversee project working conditions and the work performance of Soft Floor Coverers and maintain safety standards for working conditions and practices.

Important and Essential Duties:
The duties you'll perform will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Plan and prioritize work schedules on a continuous basis according to production targets.
  • Assign and direct the work of Soft Floor Coverers and others on maintenance and repair projects, and schedule and coordinate work with other crafts and departments.
  • Create estimates of time and materials on requested work orders for repairs and maintenance, and research materials for the appropriate application for project requirements.
  • Inspect work in progress and upon completion inspect for quality and adherence to specifications. Develop work schedules and plans.
  • Perform the tasks of subordinates when required and assess working conditions.
  • Requisition of the necessary materials and equipment; provide justifications and estimates for future equipment and material needs-based.
  • Recording hours worked to create required reports, monitor, and submit timesheets for staff.
  • Instruct employees in the safe operation of shop equipment and assure adherence to safe work practices; administer Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and give required safety tailgates and training.
  • Assist in the development, motivation, and advancement of staff through training and effective use of employee development programs; administer performance appraisals; resolve employee problems; assure adherence to shop rules and policies, including counseling staff and initiating disciplinary procedures if required.
  • Work in conjunction with support staff, including engineers, architects, and other technical experts to coordinate work plans; develop relationships with city departments, non-city organizations, and the public.
  • Inspect work for quality and correctness as required by the plan or project specifications; use hand and power tools; perform a variety of tasks that require lifting, bending, stooping, and crawling; kneel, bend, or squat for extended periods of time while laying carpet, linoleum or soft tile when required; and to operate a motor vehicle.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship training program in carpet, linoleum, and soft tile laying work of at least four years duration.

And

Four (4) years of verifiable journey-level experience in carpet, linoleum, and soft tile laying work;

OR

Six years of journey-level experience in carpet and linoleum laying work, including at least two (2) years in each specialty in carpet, linoleum, and soft tile.

License and Certification:
Possession and maintenance of a valid driver license.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Keen color perception.
  2. Physical strength and agility.
  3. Experience using a computerized maintenance management system to monitor work requests and enter dates related to completed repairs.
  4. Experience using Microsoft Office applications.
