Job Description

Under direction 3530 Chaplain, plans, prepares, and conducts religious and spiritual care services. Examples of essential duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Provides strategic oversight of the provision of spiritual care services to patients/residents, their loved ones, and staff, in collaboration with appropriate hospital administration and spiritual care leadership; 
  • serves as a primary clinical staff chaplain, leading the delivery of spiritual support to the unique psychosocial and cultural communities at LHH, ZSFG and other affiliated partners within DPH; 
  • coordinates and provides consultation with specific units and interdisciplinary teams (e.g. Supportive and Palliative Care Service, the Critical Incident Response Team, etc.) to meet the spiritual care needs of patients/residents and programs; provides in-service training to staff regarding spiritual care services and effective referrals;
  • oversees and directs the activities of volunteers and/or student/intern Chaplains; 
  • develops and maintains relationships with appropriate clinical and administrative staff, and constituency groups; 
  • oversees internal and external communications related to spiritual care services including, but not limited to managing communications with spiritual care communities, the archdiocese, as well as hospitals and other affiliated partners within DPH; 
  • supervises employees providing spiritual care services. 
  • In coordination with the Volunteer Services department supervises and coordinates volunteers within the spiritual care services. 

The 3530 Chaplain also performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  1. Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a minimum of twelve (12) semester units in counseling, psychology, or a related field; AND
  2. Experience: Two (2) years of Chaplain experience with primary responsibilities including providing spiritual care services and overseeing, monitoring, or coordinating a program providing spiritual care services.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One-year fulltime employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine fulltime employment.

Selection Procedures:
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
Candidates will be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Supplemental Questionnaire Examination: (Weight = 100%): Qualified candidates will be sent a Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) exam that must be completed by the set date. Candidates will be evaluated on their relative knowledge, skill and ability levels in job-related areas. A passing score must be achieved on the SQ in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List. Candidate responses on the Supplemental Questionnaire cannot be changed once submitted. Candidates will be placed in rank order according to their final score on the SQ. 
Supplemental Questionnaire will be evaluated in relations to the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this class which may include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of regulations, policies, and guidelines governing the delivery of religious and spiritual care services; Knowledge of Standards of Practice for Professional Chaplains; Knowledge of palliative care, social determinants of health, and general nature of mental disorders; Ability to serve people of all religious and spiritual traditions, as well as people who are not religious with cultural humility; Ability to ensure compliance with established regulations, policies, and guidelines governing the delivery of religious and spiritual care services ; Ability to develop and implement training programs for new and existing Chaplains; Communication; Interpersonal relations ability; Ability to effectively organize and assign work.

Eligible List: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores, and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible lists, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available to public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g. as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of twelve (12) months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.
