What We Do: The Mayor’s Office is seeking one Policy Advisor, directly reporting to the Mayor’s Policy Director. The primary responsibility of the Policy Team within the Mayor’s Office is to develop legislative and programmatic policy initiatives for the Mayor. Other functions include guiding implementation of programs, developing initiatives to be included in the City budget, and synthesizing complex governmental issues into clear written and oral communications.

Job Description

What You’ll Be Doing:  The Mayor’s Office is currently seeking a candidate for a Policy Advisor to focus on climate change and environmental policy more broadly, including energy and water. As Policy Advisor, you will be on a team with other Advisors in the Mayor’s Office. Each Advisor has specific topical areas of focus and responsibility, yet responsibilities may extend beyond core topical areas from time to time.

As a Policy Advisor to the Mayor, you will: develop legislative and programmatic initiatives for the Mayor within your core area of focus; engage with a broad array of stakeholders from the public, City departments, and other elected officials and their staff at the local, state, and federal levels; analyze and distill complex governmental issues for easy internal and external communication; monitor departmental and Commission actions; make recommendations to senior members of the Mayor’s Office and the Mayor; and act as the primary public contact between the Mayor’s Office and external stakeholders on your areas of focus.

Position Details: The Mayor’s Environment Advisor will be focused on developing and overseeing implementation of policy initiatives to advance the Mayor’s Climate Action Plan and make San Francisco more resilient to the effects of climate change. The Advisor’s policy portfolio includes climate change mitigation and adaptation, sustainability, water, air quality, clean transportation, and clean energy. This interdisciplinary role requires working collaboratively with several City Departments, including the Department of Environment and San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, and with the Mayor’s Advisors on Housing and Transportation.

Working Hours: Full-time, 40 hours/week. Additional hours may be required to complete assignments, as needed.
 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

3+ years of relevant experience or advanced degree in public policy or related field.

Desireable Qualifications:

Strong analytical, quantitative, and writing skills; public policy experience; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work well under pressure and with a variety of individuals, including city department staff and Mayor’s Office staff; computer literacy.
