Job Description

Under general supervision, the Watershed Keeper is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, protecting, and patrolling 38,000 acres of San Francisco watershed lands and trails, 210 miles of pipeline rights-of-way, lakes and reservoirs on foot, ATV/UTV, vehicle, or by boat, in all types of weather conditions, with exposure to poison oak, rattlesnakes, and other potentially hazardous elements, Patrol for high Fire activity and fight wildland fires and to monitor for security, contamination, trespass activity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collects water samples for laboratory analysis, records data from water gauges measuring reservoir levels, water releases, and precipitation measurements.
  • Operates valves and identifies repairs to be made on machinery.
  • Removes debris and other unwanted materials from watershed property.
  • Assists with the repairs of fences and gates.
  • Reports and responds to various emergency conditions such as fighting brush fires and taking preventive measures against natural disasters.
  • Provides assistance to other departmental field personnel and responds to inquiries from other agencies and the public.
  • Prepares comprehensive written reports of all job-related activities.
  • Attends training workshops.
  • Provides directions, and instructions to individuals or group.
  • Operates boats, and a two-way radio in order to communicate with administration from the watershed.
  • Uses and maintains chainsaws, weed whackers, ATV/Tractors, and other power equipment to help maintain the watershed and trail.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Condition:

Incumbent must be able to foot patrol on rough and uneven terrain and drive 4X4 trucks on mountainous roads in inclement weather condition, operate boats, and use physical dexterity. Incumbent will be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Incumbent must have the ability to be deputized, wear uniform, and successfully pass background investigation.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).

Experience:

  • One (1) year of experience in general laboring and caretaking work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

License and Certification:

  • Possession of a valid California driver's license.
