Job Description

Under general supervision, performs laboratory analytical tasks and professional duties to evaluate water, wastewater, and recycled water to determine compliance with state regulations; conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses using a variety of laboratory instruments and wet chemistry techniques; keeps detailed and accurate analytical records; uses a laboratory information management system to track, control and report analytical data to variety of water quality clients; conforms to laboratory safe practices; assists bureau and laboratory personnel as necessary to achieve the goals of the department.

Essential Functions:

1. Coordinates projects with the external clients and internal clients while ensuring customer satisfaction. 

2. Coordinates, prepares, and performs physical and chemical analysis of recycled water, drinking water, wastewater, biosolids, and a variety of environmental matrices using EPA and Standard Methods approved methodology to determine compliance with regulatory agencies.

3. Coordinates, prepares, and performs quantitative and qualitative on inorganic constituents using EPA or Standard Methods approved tests utilizing segmented flow-injection analysis instrument, spectrophotometer, catalytic oxidation combustion instrument, and other related instrumentation.

4. Coordinates, prepares, and performs quantitative and qualitative wet chemistry analysis using EPA or Standard Methods approved methods for Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Total Cyanide, Total Suspended Solids, Total Dissolved Solids, Total Solids, Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen, Ammonia, Nitrate+Nitrite, Conductivity, Alkalinity, pH, Chloride, Chlorine Residual, and other related wet chemistry analysis.

5. Implements QA/QC and related TNI requirements as instructed by Laboratory Quality Assurance related to reagent and standard tracking, equipment calibrations, equipment maintenance tracking, and related items. Reviews and updates Standard Operating Procedures via laboratory workflow management system (Qualtrax) and submits revisions to be reviewed by Supervising Chemist, Quality Manager, and/or Laboratory Manager.

6. Completes Demonstration of Capabilities, ethics and other trainings prior as part of the Laboratory Quality Program.

7. Maintains detailed and accurate instrumental and analytical records; prepares updated control charts and method detection level determination for regularly scheduled water and wastewater analyses. 

8. Receives samples, create batches, and perform analyses according to ELAP approved Field of Accreditation; enters data into the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and may review data generated by peers.

9. Troubleshoots and diagnoses rudimentary problems with analytical methods and laboratory instruments/equipment. Performs routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment. Clean, calibrate and otherwise maintain delicate laboratory instrument.

10. Initiates corrective action when issues arise and require improvement.

11. Observes all safety procedures and protocols. Attends all Laboratory Safety training.

12. Interprets and summarizes data collected from analytical testing; summarizes quality assurance data in report form; prepares oral and written reports of analytical activities. 

13. Train technicians and other Chemists in proper laboratory technique, chemical theory, analytical instrumentation use and maintenance, reagent preparation, and data entry and interpretation.

14. Maintain a clean and organize work area.

15. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned by Supervisor or Laboratory Management.

16. Maintains adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and materials to ensure analysis is not delayed.

Working Condition:

The incumbent may be required to work on Saturday and Sunday as needed. 

Qualifications

  • Possession of baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in chemistry or closely related science.

License and Certification:

  • Possession of a current valid California driver's license
