The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions - the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health.

The San Francisco Health Network is the City's only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center (LHH), and over 15 primary care health centers.

DPH is accepting applications for Nurse Practitioner (Trauma) positions. ZSFG is an essential part of San Francisco’s health care system serving some 100,000 patients each year and providing 20 percent of the city’s inpatient care. Recognized as one of the nation’s top hospitals, we serve the community with a full complement of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, diagnostic and psychiatric services for adults and children 24-hours a day.

NATURE OF POSITIONS
This recruitment may be used to fill the following Nurse Practitioner positions:

  • Trauma and Acute Care Surgery positions provide acute care to critically injured and acute care surgery patients in Emergency Department, ICU and Medical/Surgical Ward settings.
  • Neurology positions provide nursing care of the brain and neurologically impaired, injured patients, along with acute care neurology patients.
  • Neurological Surgery positions provide nursing care of the brain and spinal cord injured patients, along with acute care neurological surgery patients.

The list resulting from this recruitment may be used to fill Nurse Practitioner (Trauma) positions for the next six months.

Job Description

General Job Description
Under general nursing and medical direction, utilizing standardized procedures, the Nurse Practitioner functions within an organized system for the delivery of health care in association with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team and performs specialized nurse practitioner duties in clinical settings.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) coordinates and implements aspects of trauma care (medical and surgical) of the injured and acute care surgery patients. The NP provides effective health care in maintaining collaborative and consultative relationship with all members of the interdisciplinary care team while providing excellent and timely care to the patients admitted to ZSFG.  In addition, the NP provides continuity in attending outpatient clinics for follow up.

The essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides routine preventative and continuity care to adult and/or pediatric patients; this may include complete history and physical examinations;
  • Orders diagnostic tests, which may include laboratory tests, X-rays and other imaging, E.K.G.s, and other disease or condition specific diagnostic tests;
  • Identifies and manages patients with unstable chronic diseases appropriate to clinical specialty;
  • Provides urgent care to acutely ill patients, including providing care to both trauma and general surgery patients in the Inpatient and Outpatient setting;
  • Acute care planning for patients in an inpatient setting;
  • Assesses and diagnosis, develops treatment plans, and furnishes medications;
  • Counsels and educates patients, and collaborates with healthcare team; orients and educates medical students and surgical house-staff to the Trauma Service guidelines and protocols;
  • Consults with physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of unstable and complex patient conditions;
  • Documents medical records, and adheres to patient privacy;
  • Participates in staff meetings and conferences regarding patient care, as well as quality improvement/control activities; AND

The Nurse Practitioner performs other related duties as assigned/required.

Qualifications

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.  SPECIALTY AREA REQUIREMENTS (TRAUMA):

  a. Specialization as an Acute Care NP or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP; AND
  b. 
Possession of a valid Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association 

2.  LICENSE: Possession of a valid California Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; AND 

3.  LICENSE: Possession of a valid California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; AND 

4.  LICENSE: Possession of a current medication furnishing license issued by the California Board of Registered Nurses; AND 

5.  EDUCATION: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited college or university; AND 

6.  CERTIFICATION: Possession of national board certification, or eligibility, as a Nurse Practitioner issued by one of the following recognized national certifying body or organization: 

  a.  American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)
  b.  American Nurses Association – American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) 
  c.  Pediatric Nursing Certification Board 
  d.  National Certification Corporation (NCC) for the Women’s Health Care and Neonatal Nursing Specialties 
  e.  American Association of Critical Care Nurses

Desirable Qualifications: The following desirable qualifications are applicable to Adult Medicine NP positions working on the Inpatient Medical-Surgical Units at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center:

  • One year of experience in critical care
  • Experience in an acute care hospital (a hospital which provides 24-hour inpatient care, including the following basic services: Medical, Nursing, Surgical, Anesthesia, Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy and Dietary Services)

SELECTION PROCEDURES
Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) (Weight: Qualifying): Candidates who meet minimum qualifications will be invited via a separate link to complete the MQSQ as part of the online employment application.  This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position.
