    Job Description

    Examples of essential duties of this position include but are not limited to: 

    • Responsibility for planning, conducting and evaluating original epidemiological and/or evaluation proposals and studies to determine patterns of health outcomes and their determinants in the community.
    • Designs and implements survey and evaluation instruments and study protocols for data collection and analysis.
    • May supervise and train staff including epidemiologists to assist with the design, implementation, and evaluation of data. This includes assigning and reviewing the data coding, computer programming, data collection and other aspects of data management performed by subordinates.
    • Establishes, develops, coordinates and maintains data systems including public health surveillance to identify and monitor disease trends and risk behaviors among various populations, as well as evaluates clinical and public health interventions and policies by creating and/or manipulating databases of original/secondary data.
    • Performs complex data analysis using statistical software packages (such as SAS, ARCGIS, R) and interprets findings.
    • Recommends procedures for the control and prevention of disease and the promotion of health outcomes by assessing the evidence base .
    • May include analyzing the impact of planned interventions on the health status of target populations.
    • Provides technical consultation/assistance to departmental staff on epidemiologic research or program evaluation methodology by designing and coordinating research efforts with departmental staff and key partners. This includes reviewing protocols, proposals, instruments, presentations and papers.
    • Prepares reports, presentations and scientific papers based on hypotheses and findings. Communicates epidemiologic information to multiple audiences and prepares study findings for dissemination and publication.
    • May write project and grant proposals.
    • Collaborates with internal staff and external agencies. Participates in conferences, meetings and seminars relating to the causation, spread and prevention of diseases and health outcomes. Presents findings at community and scientific meetings and conferences as needed.
    • Supports data collection and analysis for program evaluation and quality improvement activities within the department.

    The 2803 Epidemiologist II also performs other related duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    ⚠️Required Before Applying⚠️

    1. ** Completion of a master’s degree program from an accredited college or university; AND
    2. Three (3) years (equivalent to 6,000 hours) of experience within the field of Epidemiology performing study design, evaluation, or analysis.

    Substitution: Possession of a master’s degree in Epidemiology (or related social, psychological or biological science) may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.

    One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week).

    ** Note: Applicants completing their final academic term in a qualifying Master’s degree program who intend to use it for the experience substitution can qualify for the selection process. However, if selected, the candidate may NOT appointed/hired until proof of degree completion is provided. Master's degree must be awarded by June 16, 2024.

    Supplemental Questionnaire Examination (Weight: 100%): After this job announcement is unpublished, qualified applicants will receive an online exam link. The Supplemental Questionnaire will be evaluated in relation to the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for class 2803 Epidemiologist II. This may include, but is not limited to: knowledge of the principles and techniques of epidemiological research; knowledge of the principles and methods of biostatistics; knowledge of sample selection, sources of bias, and implementation of sampling techniques; ability to supervise staff engaged in epidemiological research; ability to manipulate and analyze data using statistical software packages; ability to communicate and disseminate findings through graphic and written forms; and ability to communicate clearly and maintain effective relationships.

    Note: Some assessment items from this recruitment will be used for the 2802 assessment. If you apply for this recruitment (2803) and the 2802 recruitment and qualify, you will only need to answer the items common to both recruitments once. You will need to answer additional items specific to the 2803 recruitment. 

    Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Supplemental Questionnaire exam in order to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

    Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of TEN Scores.

    The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
