Job Description

Official Title:  Production Engineer

A Welding Engineer is responsible for overseeing lean manufacturing metrics and being the technical lead for all welding operations performed at Chromalloy Component Services, Inc. (CCS). The Welding Engineer is also responsible for the creation of process documentation covering the said processes to ensure critical process characteristics are properly documented and best practices shared amongst Welding Operators.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Serve as the technical lead for all welding technology utilized at CCS.

Confer with vendors to remain abreast of the latest and greatest technology available in the welding field.

Drive lean manufacturing metrics related to welding operations performed at CCS.

Lead the identification and resolution of problems, loss reporting and continuous improvement activities for all welding operations performed at CCS.

Drive the design of any tooling and fixtures in support of welding operations performed at CCS.

Develop job planning documents defining in detail the welding operations to be performed through engineering instructions, drawings and process instructions for all welding operations performed at CCS.

Lead Engineering Department initiatives creating, documenting, developing and implementing procedures to process new repairs and components in compliance with 14 CFR Part 145 and/or any other applicable Code of Federal Regulations, manufacturer's specifications, customer specifications and other requirements as applicable.

Define and conduct all tests required to substantiate new weld repairs developed by CCS.

Participate in the First Article Inspection Review (FAIR) associated with CCS’s weld repair development and implementation programs in accordance with internal and/or customer requirements.

Establish welding procedures (WPS’s and PQR’s) to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, welding of critical joints.

Review technical information as required in support of all welding operations performed at CCS.

Lead the continuous improvement of existing welding equipment, development of new and modified welding methods, techniques and procedures.

Lead process audits in the several welding areas at CCS to ensure compliance to defined quality requirements.

Prepare technical reports as result of research and development and preventive maintenance investigations.

Conduct research and development operations to develop and test new fabrication processes and procedures.

Develop capital requests for tooling and equipment required in support of all welding operations performed at CCS.

Possess a solid understanding of manufacturing, assembly, welding and fit & trim processes.

Possess a solid understanding of geometric, dimensioning and tolerancing and welding symbology.

Assist in the training and qualification of Engineering personnel with regards to welding processes and operations performed at CCS and provide technical direction to those performing the production work on site so as to ensure that the instructions are properly interpreted and the quality requirements are met.

Oversee the qualification of welding personnel towards their certification to the applicable welding processes and operations performed at CCS.

Understand and implement the policies set forth in the several manuals and procedures available at CCS, to include but not limited to Repair Station and Quality Manual (RSQM), EASA Supplement to RSQM, Quality Systems Manual, Quality Procedures, Safety Procedures, Training Program Manual and AS9100.

Understand and implement the policies set forth in the several technical specifications available at CCS, to include but not limited to MIL, AMS, ASTM and AWS.

Understand and implement the applicable civil aviation regulations as defined by the appropriate regulatory bodies (e.g., Government, FAA, EASA, JCAB, CAAC, etc.) as required in support of CCS’s repair development and implementation programs.

Advise the Director of Engineering when there is a need to revise any engineering, inspection or production practices or procedures related to welding operations performed at CCS.

Review customer purchase orders, contracts and change requests as required to ensure that the necessary criteria and provisions are communicated to and included in the work instructions for all welding operations performed at CCS.

Develop repair justifications and quote forms in support of new repair development and implementation projects pertaining to welding operations performed at CCS.

Support Chromalloy’s Business Development and Customer Service Groups with technical communication required between the company and its customers with regards to welding technology and processes.

Develop technical relationships with CCS’s customers to a) identify additional business opportunities for CCS and b) support the resolution of any technical conflicts that may arise during a contract / purchase order execution; plan and coordinate customer visits from a technical support standpoint as required to do so.

Develop internal and external reports as required identifying the status of welding related operations.

Interact with Engineering, Quality, Operations and Customer Service personnel to ensure the planned welding work reflects the technical requirements requested by CCS’s customers.

Support the Director of Engineering maintaining clean, orderly and safe working conditions in the Engineering Department.

Exhibit excellent written and verbal skills to effectively communicate with peers, supervisors and management personnel, displaying an attitude that promotes teamwork and cooperation between the various internal departments.

Demonstrate a good mechanical aptitude.

Demonstrate ability to multitask in a fast-paced work environment.

Perform duties of a lower classification as workload dictates.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Engineering.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

College degree in an Engineering discipline from an accredited institution; background in Welding or Materials Engineering preferred. A minimum of 3 years of experience in welding operations; preferred welding processes are GTAW, RSW, LBW and EBW.

CERTIFICATIONS

Robotic welding experience desired but not mandatory.

AWS-CWI Certification desired but not mandatory.

Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma Certification desired but not mandatory.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Strong computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Prior experience using Microsoft Project, Visio, and Access desired but not mandatory.

Experience with CNC programming for robotic welding operations desired but no mandatory.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Ability to perform complex engineering calculations using advanced mathematical functions (derivatives, integrals, area, perimeter and volume calculations, etc.).
