Job Description

The Customs & Trade Compliance Support Advisor will actively contribute in implementing Chiquita’s trade compliance strategy focused on the EU region. The Support Advisor will provide customs compliance advisory to ensure applicable laws, regulations, and give guidance about global import / export activity. The Support Advisor will be responsible for implementing global policies and assisting with local or regional procedures. The Support Advisor will actively monitor custom clearances at all European ports of entry and respective document administrative internally/externally.

The role will report directly to the EMEA Customs and Trade Compliance Manager and liaise with teams across the organization including but not limited to, Finance, Tax, Accounting, Supply Chain and Operations

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Performs Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Customs and Trade Compliance across all EU countries, under the supervision of the EMEA Customs and Trade Compliance Manager.
  • Carries out regular risk assessments and executes plan for internal assessments/audits, reports back to the EMEA Customs and Trade Compliance Manager for routine monitoring and surveillance of trade activity in EU.
  • Conducts regular business reviews with customs agent’s providers to review customs declarations, metrics, business strategy, new regulations, and partner towards mutual improvements.
  • Evaluates process gaps and communicates areas of non-compliance, potential compliance risks and collaborates with business partners to put corrective actions in place.
  • Provides trade compliance advisory and enforces import and export policies and standard operating procedures for EU countries to ensure compliance with local and foreign customs laws, regulations, and administrative practice.
  • Evaluates need for customs import and export permits as needed.
  • Partners closely with Tax and Operations and provides strategic and operational input into the supply chain decisions.
  • Supports the EMEA Customs and Trade Compliance Manager in managing Customs/OGA audits, inspections, and regulatory agency inquiries in the regional scope of responsibility.
  • Collaborates on establishing reporting and electronic interfaces with EU governments and customs agents and oversees data analytics strategy.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 to 3 years of direct experience in international trade and business operations focused on customs activities in the EU (agricultural experience preferred).
  • Knowledge of Dutch and EU import/export requirements, customs permit and regulations.  
  • Solid Microsoft Excel proficiency.
  • Fluent in Dutch, English. Other European languages a plus.
  • Self-starter and experienced in managing assigned work independently.

  • A combination of compliance and project management experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree or HBO/MBO.

Additional Information

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and previous experience with Dutch customs regulations (Tax and Customs Administration- Belastingdienst), EU DG Trade, DG Agri, organic certifiers and Other Government Agencies.
  • Project management skills and capabilities (incl. status updates, cross-functional collaboration, vendor management).
  • Training on import/export compliance and certifications, and previous knowledge in specific global compliance programs (AEO, C-TPAT, others).
  • Risk assessment and auditing experience.
