Job Description

Position Overview

The purpose of Change Elemental’s communications are to lift up and co-create emerging, timely, and resonant narratives that: amplify and deepen liberatory practices; share both a vision for a next world and stories of how we can live in that world in the present; and center the interdependence and relationships necessary to be and do differently. Our communications strategies are in support of our overall aim to shift the change-making sector to one that is prefiguring and iterating toward our vision of love, dignity, and justice. 

The Communications Associate will be responsible for the implementation of our communications strategies, primarily connecting with and growing our core audience and network by sharing our content and that of our partners across multiple platforms in ways that center multiple ways of knowing (https://changeelemental.org/embedding-multiple-ways-of-knowing/). They will be responsible for managing and distributing content through our newsletter, social media, and our website in addition to contributing to the development of other communications-related projects. This is a full-time position and is virtual.

Roles and Responsibilities

Growing Our Community and Presence

  • Partner with the Communications Lead to build Change Elemental’s identity, brand, and presence in support of:

    • Connecting with our core audiences and developing relationships with them.

    • Growing our online mycelium—networks of co-creators, partners, collaborators, artists, storytellers, and other people advancing toward a common vision.

    • Lifting up narratives and content—of ours, our partners, and other people in the field—that build and deepen practices, mindsets, and ways of being/doing for liberation.
       

  • Manage the distribution of Change Elemental’s newsletter (Mailchimp) 

    • Partner with the communications team to create an editorial calendar based on our strategy, and periodically check in on shifts needed to the calendar.

    • Project manage an editorial calendar, timeline, and writing assignments, including managing deadlines and communicating with staff.

    • Manage the mailing list, including collaborating with the team to update and maintain the list.
       

  • Manage our social media, sharing content across networks (currently, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn)

    • Build lists and networks on social platforms. 

    • Schedule and manage our social media calendar (Hootsuite).

    • Curate content by collaborating with our team and our partners.
       

  • Manage website maintenance and updates (Wordpress)

    • Liaison with the website designer to handle monthly maintenance and occasional functionality and design updates.

    • Maintain a timeline for website maintenance and featured content updates. 

    • Upload new content—blogs, images, and featured content sections. 
       

  • Track data for our website, newsletter, and social media monthly in order to refine our strategy for connecting with and growing our audiences.

 

Narrative Building and Content Creation

  • Listen to our audiences to support and partner with the team to craft responses to the moments we are in, share practices people are exploring, and identify narratives to lift up.

  • Identify, co-create, and share content on social platforms.

  • Craft messaging for social and our newsletter in alignment with our strategy, values, and the elements of deep change.

Design and Editing

  • Design and proofread newsletter.

  • Proofread blogs, articles, and newsletters with attention to detail.

  • Design graphics, or other creative collateral for the newsletter, social media, blog, and website.

  • Bring multiple ways of engaging people and sharing content (text, images, video, poetry, movement, drawings, etc.) into our design and holding the emotional and intuitive way people connect to content.

Collaboration and Strategic Connections 

  • Ground your work by connecting to our organizational strategy, structure, and culture as well as our client and field work by participating in staff meetings, caucuses, and smaller project teams. 

  • Partner with the Communications Lead and the full communications team to continue to deepen and refine our strategy implementation in relationship to what is showing up internally and in the field.

  • Participate in supervision and professional development/growth work to grow capacity in all areas of work and leadership. All staff collectively hold the growth and development of Change Elemental. Right now, we are focused on strengthening our equity capacity, inner work, and human sustainability. All staff participate in on-going learning, reflection, and experimentation to align our internal practices with our values.

Special Projects

  • Manage operations and tactical implementation of special projects

  • Troubleshoot issues

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Needed

This position requires someone who:

  • Demonstrates strong organizational and project management skills 

  • Thrives on detail (and knows when the details are not that important)

  • Has excellent communication skills: speaking, writing, and listening

  • Has 3+ years of communications experience or another combination of experiences that contribute to the skills and knowledge you bring, including managing social media accounts for an organization, network, or brand

Not required, but let us know if you have this experience: 

  • Visual or graphic design experience 

  • Other artistic ways of expressing/creative practice

  • Website design and/or coding experience

Additional Information

Salary & Benefits
The starting salary range for this position is $50,000-$65,000 depending on experience. We have a generous benefits package, including 100% paid health insurance for full-time employees, three weeks of vacation time, wellness time, a 5% employer retirement contribution, and a commitment to professional development and growth. We are also in the early stages of an equity review of our salaries, likely to continue through the fall of this year.

Additional Information
This is a virtual position. The candidate will need to attend staff retreats 2x per year and occasionally attend conferences or other convenings in support of our work or for professional development purposes. We request that the candidate live within one hour of a major airport.
