Job Description

The Computer Operator monitors system performance of document processors, analyzes problems and takes corrective action, executes the daily job schedule, and performs various computer operations tasks in accordance with policies, procedures, rules, confidentiality/ security requirements and production deadlines.

This position is temporary for up to 12 months and beyond, and will be part-time Monday - Wednesday from 3:00pm - 7:00pm (12 hours/week.) The position may include sickness/vacation coverage of 3 X 12 hours shift (36 hours/week.) Shifts may include weekends.

As the ideal candidate your primary accountabilities include: 

  • Monitoring system performance of document processors by means of consoles and/or online terminals, reacting to directions from systems and/or applications software to ensure that critical production deadlines are met for each shift;
  •  Analyzing recurring and potential computer operations problems and taking corrective action as required, or calls on external technical support as necessary. Ensuring that all system and application failures/problems are ticketed and logged for review and action by technical support specialists; 
  • Executing daily jobs according to established procedures and job schedules to ensure maximum use of computer time;
  • Completing and verifying balancing forms; 
  • Responding to incoming calls in a timely fashion; performing system checks and critical service resumption routines; providing progress reports to service bureau customers; maintaining a log of problems and action taken for problem resolution, and providing end-of-day reporting; Monitoring multiple payment operation systems and performing specific testing of scheduled changes and notifying/escalating the status as required; 
  • Keeping a log of influences that affect production schedules and quality assurance standards and performing a variety of duties such as the inspection, cleaning and routine maintenance of computer equipment, ordering of computer supplies, and maintenance of documentation relating to computer operation. 

Qualifications

As the ideal candidate you possess:

  • Grade 12 supplemented by post secondary courses in computer operations. Two years related experience in a data center or similar operation.
  • Good knowledge of computer equipment and document processors, operating systems and applications.
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and solve the more routine operating problems within a limited time frame. Good technical, analytical, problem solving, organizational, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication skills as you regularly speak with service providers, customers, technical support/co-workers and team members in a busy team environment.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions, and work well under pressure.
