Job Description

The role is responsible for managing a team of operational risk analysts. A seasoned manager with hands on experience developing and implementing operational risk frameworks, tools or models is required. Exceptional communication and influencing skills are necessary. The role will entail coaching junior staff, leading operational risk initiatives and fostering a positive relationship with all Central 1 lines of business and support functions.  

The role reports to the Director, Compliance and Operational Risk and is based in Toronto or Vancouver.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Manages all levels of operational risk reporting for the Director, Compliance and Operational Risk.
  • Provides senior leadership in developing, implementing and communicating operational risk policies and procedures. 
  • Partner with all Central 1 lines of business and support functions in identifying, reporting and mitigating operational risk issues and be the subject matter expert in the operational risk framework and risks/processes/controls. 
  • Apply sound judgement, experience and carry out practices for overseeing and challenging the effective implementation of operational risk management activities within assigned areas of the organization and in accordance with Central 1’s operational risk management framework. 
  • Maintain a strong understanding of current business and function risks to adequately assess risk exposures and impacts. 
  • Create and maintain effective relationships and regular interaction with all groups and departments, other members of the risk group, external stakeholders and regulators, as applicable. 
  • Identify and assess the resolution of issues which could prevent reasonable assurance that risks are understood and managed within the organizations operational risk appetite. 
  • Partner with assigned areas in the development of their own policies, procedures and training programs to facilitate management of operational risks and controls. This position will be required to assess and challenge policies and standards and have the experienced ability to influence and communicate collaboratively with key senior partners within Central 1’s lines of business and support functions. 
  • Manage a team of operational risk analysts. Provides training and coaching to the Operational Risk team and is accountable for the development of staff while addressing succession initiatives. 
  • Promote and foster a positive work environment that encourages innovation, creativity, teamwork and quality. 
  • Partner with management and other team members in the achievement of individual, divisional and team goals. 
  • Creates organizational culture and processes that enable cross functional teamwork and development of cooperative relationships across the Risk Group and Central 1's three offices

Qualifications

  • A seasoned risk professional with seven to ten years’ experience in risk management and policy 
  • A detailed knowledge of financial institution operations, with a focus on payments and treasury
  • Knowledge of Regulatory Compliance Risk and OSFI guidelines E-13, E-22 and E-21
  • Sound understanding of Operational Risk Management measurement and reporting 
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to break down complex situations into manageable parts in a systematic manner 
  • Proven track record of sound people management and leadership experience is required, including a demonstrated ability of influencing the actions of others within and outside of his/her areas of responsibility.
  • Organizational awareness and demonstrated relationship building skills, with a superior ability to make things happen using positive influence to implement changes
  • Ability to thrive and apply judgement within an environment of ambiguity
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities 
  • Experienced professional and articulates with well-developed written communication skills 
  • Ability to manage external relationships and internal relationships 
  • Enjoy working in a team environment but also able to work independently 
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to understand and interpret regulations and policies 
  • Strong project management skills 
  • Process/control and design and analysis skills are a definite asset
