Job Description

The Center for Applied Linguistics is located in Washington DC. This is a hybrid position, and the employee may choose to work in their preferred combination of in person at the office in a hoteling capacity, or remotely. Candidates for this position are preferred to reside within the DC Metro area (DC/Maryland/Virginia) or be willing to relocate to the DC Metro area prior to starting the role.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position will serve as the lead for supporting external and internal mission-related communications for the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL).  This position will report to the CEO of the organization and will supervise one staff person.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and manage annual CAL communication plan and budget in support of CAL’s mission. 
  • Maintain and coordinate CAL’s extensive internal intranet using Microsoft Teams.
  • Take a lead role supporting CAL’s business development strategies and activities. Maintain data analytic dashboards and reports supporting existing program services and products as well as new development initiatives.
  • Coordinate with CAL staff in creating and maintaining a schedule of CAL external events, such as conferences and meetings. Coordinate with CAL staff on providing support for conference materials, communications, announcements, promotion, conference exhibits. Serve as point of contact with communication vendors, suppliers, etc.
  • Support the production and distribution of CAL’s external communication activities such as its annual report, online newsletter, blogs, etc, podcasts, etc.  Coordinate the planning, production and promotion of CAL publications. Support CAL copyright activities.  Maintain CAL branding guidelines and resources.
  • Provide support for CAL Board of Trustees events and activities
  • Maintain CAL’s websites in coordination with program and IT staff. 
  • Maintain a contact database to support marketing, promotional and outreach services.
  • Coordinate and provide support for CAL’s online presentations and related online services.
  • Create synergy and support for CAL services, products, and initiatives through creative, aggressive and coordinated marketing and social media strategies and activities.
  • Provide support for programmatic and organizational video and multimedia products and services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in communications, marketing, management information systems, or related field and at least four (4) years of relevant experience; or Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong demonstrated experience writing, editing, marketing, developing social media messaging and website maintenance.
  • Hands-on experience with WordPress, Canva, social media, video editing software, Moodle and contact management systems.
  • Experience with dual language education, world languages, TESOL and/or applied linguistics.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Commitment to supporting diversity, equity and inclusion activities in the workplace, services, and products.
  • Extensive hands-on experience using MS Teams, Microsoft Office tools and ecommerce solutions.
  • Outstanding verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Extensive demonstrated experience marketing, managing, and promoting online solutions.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills a must
  • Experience with grant writing and development activities
  • Critical thinking skills, creative ability and analytical skills a plus
  • Ability to multi-task and balance competing priorities efficiently, effectively, and diplomatically.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and sound judgment.
  • Ability to work well across the organization in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability in English and at least one additional language preferred.

COMPENSATION

Minimum Salary: $76,719 Annually

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to effectively communicate. The employee may be required to sit or stand in a stationary position for 50% of the time. This position constantly operates a computer and other office productivity equipment. CAL adheres to ADA compliance and guidelines as a common practice.
