This position requires candidates to reside within the DC Metro area (DC/Maryland/Virginia) or be willing to relocate to the DC Metro area prior to starting the role.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) is recruiting for an experienced Specialist to join our Adult Language and Communication team. This position will be responsible for supporting recruitment, application, selection and documentation processes associated with CAL’s Adult Language work with the English for Heritage Language Speakers program as it is associated with sponsored projects implemented by CAL’s Director, Adult Language and Communication. The Specialist, Adult Language and Communication will plan, execute, and document all aspects of assigned projects. This role works closely with senior staff to verify that the scope and direction of each project is on schedule and adequately supported. Responsible for project activities and completion of assigned project tasks and deliverables.

Attend and present at professional conferences and workshops representing CAL and sponsored projects. Ability to travel approximately 25% of the year required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Recruiting EHLS applicants

  • Manage national recruitment campaign.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with heritage community organizations, educational institutions, and media outlets.
  • Organize in-person and online informational events for program staff. Prepare presentation materials, as requested.
  • Implement national-level advertising campaign: create and place print and online advertisements; create and send HTML email blasts to community organization contacts.
  • Maintain program website (WordPress) and social media presence.
  • Manage advertisement and recruitment budget for the EHLS program.
  • Respond to applicant inquiries.

Application and Selection Process

  • Coordinate with and support subcontractor(s) throughout application and selection process.
  • Assist in the facilitation of reviewer training and support selection committee meeting.

Language Testing

  • Coordinate the scheduling and proctoring of Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPIs) in English for all EHLS applicants with a completed application.
  • Coordinate the logistics and operations of language testing of EHLS provisionally selected candidates at entry and EHLS scholars at exit from the program.
  • Coordinate the scoring and rating of writing tests.
  • Manage and supervise teams of temporary staff as needed throughout the testing cycle.

Program Administration and Reporting

  • Assist with research on program outcomes and language acquisition at high levels of proficiency.
  • Contribute to scheduled project reports when requested by project director.
  • Collaborate with and provide support to other program staff as needed.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in language/linguistics, education, immigrant integration, or a related discipline/field, with at least four (4) years of relevant experience required; or
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in language/linguistics, education, immigrant integration, or a related discipline/field, with at least two (2) years of relevant experience required.
  • Experience with communications/marketing, managing websites and social media, and/or language teaching/assessment
  • Experience with WordPress, MailChimp, HTML, and Adobe Creative Suite.

Preferred

  • Experience in adult ESL contexts
  • Experience teaching diverse populations of language learners (e.g., adult, newcomers, bilingual).
  • Experience with heritage language community organizations
  • Experience with developing professional development products and services.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (as well as strong writing and editing skills).
  • Proficient in a language other than English.
  • Advanced Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Must be flexible, organized, attentive to detail, and able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with under resourced adults and advancing social equity.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced team environment.

COMPENSATION:

Minimum Salary: $51,798 Annually

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to effectively communicate. The employee may be required to sit or stand in a stationary position for 50% of the time. This position constantly operates a computer and other office productivity equipment. CAL adheres to ADA compliance and guidelines as a common practice.
