Where you fit in

To oversee the day-to-day operation of provision for learners with special educational needs (SEN) and to provide professional guidance in the area of SEN in order to secure high quality teaching and the effective use of resources to bring about improved standards of achievement of all learners.

To act as a key point of contact for staff in relation to the provision, planning and funding of support for learners with SEN.

 

Main Duties & Accountabilities

Strategic direction and development of SEN provision

·         Overseeing the day-to-day operation of that policy with the aim of raising SEN pupil achievement

·         Ensure that EHCP’s are in place.

·         You may be required to attend multi agency meetings, CAF’s and Annual Reviews

  • Support on the completion of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and the securing of higher needs funding to meet identified needs
  • Work with senior colleagues to ensure that the service meets its responsibilities under the Equalities Act (2010) with regard to reasonable adjustments and access arrangements
  • Ensure that service policies, procedures and practices relating to SEN are adhered to
  • In partnership with senior colleagues, monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning
  • Help colleagues to evaluate the impact of their teaching on learners.
  • Ensure continuity and progression through the analysis of learner performance data, the assessment of progress and support for teaching staff with target setting
  • Work with teaching colleagues to support coherence and consistency in curriculum progression in Colleges and NCS Curriculum,
  • Liaise with external agencies, commissioners and other stake holders to communicate strategy and progress in relation to SEN particularly in preparation for Ofsted
  • Ensure that the service keeps the records of all learners with SEN up-to-date
  • Liaise with the designated safeguarding lead where there are issues relating to a learner with SEN
  • Advise on the deployment of the service’s delegated budget and other resources to meet learners’ needs effectively.
  • Design and deliver a SEND training plan for staff across college and NCS regions.

Recording and Assessment

  • Work with colleagues to identify and set challenging targets for raising achievement among pupils with SEN
  • Ensure that robust tracking systems are in place to collect and interpret specific pupil level assessment data, allowing the service to identify ‘value added’ resulting from teaching and intervention strategies
  • Set up and manage systems for screening learners at ‘point of entry’, identifying, assessing and reviewing provision
  • Attend review meetings, parent consultations and other meetings relating to provision for SEN

 

·         To undertake any other duties that can be reasonably expected of you within your job grade

·         Services not incurring costs from supporting SEN students as packages have been appropriately costed

·         Staff confident to deliver curriculum to SEN students due to training and support received

·         All Colleges able to demonstrate provision for SEN meeting EIF guidelines

Organisational Relationships

·         To report to the Assistant Director of Catch22 Colleges and working closely with the Quality Manager.  To undertake regional and national travel relating to the delivery of training for colleagues, attendance at relevant CPD events and liaison with colleagues on issues relating to SEN strategy and practice

·         To ensure that you read, are familiar with and follow all of Catch22’s policies and procedures and ensure that you update yourself with any new or amended policies or procedures as and when necessary

·         To act as an ambassador for Catch22, upholding and promoting our corporate values and to communicate possible opportunities for Catch22 service growth to line manager

·         To undertake internal and external training as agreed with line manager and show commitment towards continuing professional development

·         To support and act as a mentor for College staff undertaking the SEN Assistants Award

Qualifications

Qualifications

Educational degree

Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) or a similar qualification

National Award in SEN Coordination

 

Knowledge

Knowledge of the SEN code of conduct and its practical application

Awareness of behaviour management techniques for groups and individuals

Knowing curriculum and pedagogical issues related to extending learner performance and achievement

DESIRABLE

School improvement principles and strategies for service improvement planning, monitoring and review

Good understanding of principles of project management including planning, monitoring, review and evaluation

Experience

Working with young people who have challenging behaviour in a classroom setting

Excellent administrative and communication skills are required in this role

Working alongside colleagues in the development of teaching and learning

Training professional audiences

Setting targets and monitoring, evaluating and recording progress

Evidence of continuous INSET with particular reference to Special Educational Needs (SEN)

 

Skills & Abilities

Ability to emphasize with the difficulties of SEN leaners in engaging with the curriculum

Capability to manage the co-ordination of learning support assistants

Good communication and presentation skills

DESIRABLE

Ability to motivate others

Understanding of the broader education context relating to SEN and Government initiatives to raise achievement
