Job Description

As the VP, Deputy General Counsel, you will be a pivotal leader and strategic partner to the executive team, overseeing the legal frameworks for our consumer marketplace and compliance program. This role requires a sophisticated "dual-threat" legal expert capable of managing high-stakes litigation while simultaneously building proactive compliance systems for product and marketing teams.

The ideal candidate will transform the legal function from a gatekeeper into an accelerator, leveraging legal technology and AI to empower our business teams. You will be the primary legal architect for our consumer facing platform’s compliance, trust and safety protocols, and privacy standards.

Product & Marketing Compliance & Automation

  • Product Counseling: Serve as the lead legal advisor to Product teams throughout the development lifecycle, providing guidance on user flows, payment systems, and rating mechanisms.
  • Scalable Compliance Systems: Design and implement "self-help" toolkits, playbooks, and decision trees that empower marketing and product teams to handle routine compliance independently.
  • AI: Develop strategy for automating lower-level legal approvals and compliance checks (e.g., marketing copy review, claim verification) through the implementation of AI and legal-tech tools.
  • Drafting & Governance: Lead the drafting and maintenance of Terms of Service (ToS), Privacy Policies, and EULAs for our consumer-facing products, ensuring they are legally robust yet accessible.

2. Litigation & Risk Management

  • Strategic Oversight: Manage a diverse portfolio of litigation, including class actions, consumer disputes, and regulatory inquiries.
  • Counsel Management: Direct outside counsel to ensure high-quality, cost-effective representation and favorable outcomes.
  • Feedback Loops: Analyze litigation data and trends to provide actionable insights to the business, mitigating future exposure through product or policy adjustments.

3. Privacy, Trust & Safety

  • Data Privacy: Sufficient familiarity with domestic and global privacy laws (CCPA/CPRA, GDPR) to issue spot and ensure "Privacy by Design" is integrated into all consumer platform features.
  • Trust & Safety Partnership: Partner closely with the Trust & Safety team to develop and refine protocols for incident response, background checks, and platform integrity.

Qualifications

  • Legal Expertise: J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
  • Professional Experience: 10+ years of legal practice, including significant in-house experience at a technology or gig-economy platform.
  • Dual-Competency: Proven track record of managing outside counsel on complex litigation while providing proactive product and marketing counseling.
  • Marketplace Experience: Deep familiarity with issues typical to gig platforms including worker classification, Section 230, FCRA regulations, safety and consumer disputes.
  • Writing Skills: Exceptional ability to draft consumer-facing Terms of Use and policies for complex, multi-sided marketplaces as well as responses to escalated customer disputes.

Preferred Skills & Attributes

  • Business Enablement: A mindset focused on "enabling" the business through education and systems-thinking rather than just spotting risks.
  • Executive Presence: Ability to communicate complex legal risks and technological opportunities clearly to the C-Suite and Board.
